  • Experiences of discrimination across the life course among pregnancy planners in the United States and Canada

    Open Access•Sharonda M Lovett, Lauren A Wise et al.•ARTICLE•SSM - Population Health•2025

Little is known about discrimination among pregnancy planners. We used questionnaire data from Pregnancy Study Online (PRESTO), a preconception cohort study, to characterize experiences, attributions, and responses to discrimination (n = 10,460). Eligible participants were assigned female at birth, aged 21-45 years, U.S. or Canadian residents, and not using contraception or fertility treatment. Participants completed a supplemental questionnaire …

  • Racialized economic segregation in relation to fecundability in a preconception cohort study

    Open Access•Sharonda M Lovett, Erin J Campbell et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Urban Health•2025•References: 10

Racialized economic segregation is a known determinant of health disparities that has been associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes. However, no study has investigated its association with fecundability, the per-cycle probability of conception. We analyzed data from 10,438 U.S. participants enrolled in Pregnancy Study Online (2013-2022), an internet-based preconception cohort study. Eligible participants were aged 21-45 years, assigned female a…

  • Impact of treatment attendance on mental health outcomes within task-shared psychological treatments: A causal analysis from the PRIME India study

    Open Access•Saloni Dev, James L Griffith et al.•ARTICLE•Cambridge Prisms Global Mental…•2025•References: 34

Task-shared psychological treatments play a critical role in addressing the global mental health treatment gap, yet their integration into routine care requires further study. This study evaluated the causal association between an implementation factor of a task-shared psychological treatment and participant outcomes to strengthen the implementation-to-outcome link within global mental health. This secondary analysis utilized cohort data from the…

  • No Safe Spaces: The Retraumatization and Dehumanization of Immigrant Survivors of Domestic Violence in the United States

    Sameera S Nayak, Xenia Efimov et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Immigrant & Refugee…•2023•References: 78

Immigrants in the United States suffer high rates of domestic violence (DV). Using data from six focus groups with 38 DV service providers, we examined how immigrant survivors navigate an often-hostile political climate and identified structural barriers to healing and help-seeking. Findings indicated that structural discrimination, social exclusion, and dehumanization compound existing trauma and negatively impact survivors’ well-being. Results …

  • African American Unemployment and the Disparity in Periviable Births

Open Access•Ralph Catalano, Deborah Karasek et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Racial and Ethnic…•2021

Periviable infants (i.e., born before 26 complete weeks of gestation) represent fewer than .5% of births in the US but account for 40% of infant mortality and 20% of billed hospital obstetric costs. African American women contribute about 14% of live births in the US, but these include nearly a third of the country’s periviable births. Consistent with theory and with periviable births among other race/ethnicity groups, males predominate among Afr…

  • Racial disparities in the transgenerational transmission of low birthweight risk

    Collette N Ncube, Daniel A Enquobahrie et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnicity and Health•2017•References: 4

Objective: To examine the association of maternal low birthweight (LBW) with infant LBW and infant LBW subgroups (i.e. moderate and very LBW), overall and among non-Hispanic (NH) white and NH black mothers. Design: We conducted a population-based cohort study in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, using linked birth record data of NH white and NH black mother-infant pairs ( N = 6,633) born in 1979-1998 and 2009-2011, respectively. The exposure of int…
