Vegetal and Animal Imagery in the History of Niketas Choniates
In recent years various scholars have applied modern literary criticism to Byzantine literature, 1 but, unlike for Classical Greek literature, the long line of traditional literary criticism is almost entirely non-existent: indeed almost without exception editions of Byzantine authors lack literary (and even grammatical) comment of any kind. To help fill this yawning chasm I wrote an article on Michael Psellos' imagery that is little more than a …
Geoponica
The Geoponica is the sole surviving manual in Greek of agricultural and animal husbandry (and to a much lesser extent of horticulture).
Gardens, Byzantine
Information on Byzantine gardens is scant: archaeological excavations have revealed little other than water‐courses; despite numerous and usually stylized and traditional details, there is no artistic representation devoted solely to a garden; the few literary descriptions are heavily dependent upon classical forebears, either vying with them or copying whatever detail is relevant and, on two occasions, even in the exact words of the original.

The erotic symbolism of the apple in late Byzantine and meta-Byzantine demotic literature
The erotic symbolism of the apple in the writers of pagan Greece afforded the Byzantines an oft-chosen field for demonstrating both their learning and their ingenuity. This exercise in antiquarianism, however, tends to conceal among at least some segments of the population a continuing daily use of such symbolism and indeed a persistent belief in the efficacy of fruits of the apple-kind in promoting fertility. Even in the Hochsprache we hear of s…
Poeti bizantini di terra d'Otranto nel secolo XIII . Marcello Gigante
Romantic Paradises: The Rôle of the Garden in the Byzantine Romance
Ekphraseis of gardens occur in only two of the five extant classical romances, those of Achilleus Tatios and of Longos, but in Byzantine romances they are almost de rigeur : indeed of the only three that eschew the theme two, Phlorios and Platziaphlore and Imberios and Margarona , are basically Frankish rather than Byzantine while the third, Theodore Prodromos’ Rhodanthe and Dosikles , closely follows Heliodoros’ Aithiopika , a classical romance …

Tibullus: A Commentary
An Anthology of Byzantine Prose
A Bibliography to the Corpus Tibullianum
