  • The argument from the good lot

    Open Access•Reinhold Scholl•ARTICLE•Studies in History and Philosophy…•2026

The argument from the bad lot highlights a systematic vulnerability of inferences to the best explanation: inferences will fail if the true hypothesis is not initially under consideration. The present paper develops the natural counter to the bad lot objection: the argument from the good lot. In inferences to causal relevance, scientists routinely rank logical contradictories: "C is a cause of E" and "C is not a cause of E". Thus, they operate wi…

  • Presume It Not: True Causes in the Search for the Basis of Heredity

Aaron Novick, Reinhold Scholl et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal for the…•2020•Cited by: 5•References: 45

Kyle Stanford has recently given substance to the problem of unconceived alternatives, which challenges the reliability of inference to the best explanation (IBE) in remote domains of nature. Conjoined with the view that IBE is the central inferential tool at our disposal in investigating these domains, the problem of unconceived alternatives leads to scientific anti-realism. We argue that, at least within the biological community, scientists are…

  • Scenes from a Marriage: On the Confrontation Model of History and Philosophy of Science

Reinhold Scholl, Raphael Scholl•ARTICLE•Journal of the Philosophy of…•2018•Cited by: 5

According to the "confrontation model," integrated history and philosophy of science operates like an empirical science. It tests philosophical accounts of science against historical case studies much like other sciences test theory against data. However, the confrontation model's critics object that historical facts can neither support generalizations nor genuinely test philosophical theories. Here I argue that most of the model's defects trace …

  • Slavery in Greco-Roman Egypt

Open Access•Youval Rotman, Reinhold Scholl et al.•CHAPTER•Law and Legal Practice in Egypt…•2014

Introduction Anyone who has seen a spectacular movie set in Egypt, say, for example, The Ten Commandments starring Charlton Heston, will be forgiven for coming away with the impression that the land was full of slaves who spent all their time suffering while building pyramids and other massive structures. Herodotus (2.124), of course, reports a similar image of slave labor and pyramid building. So it is perhaps surprising to see in the preceding …
