Roman Campaigns and Negotiations in the East, 542–545
This article seeks to support the earlier dating of campaigns on the Roman eastern frontier in the 540s. It addresses points made in a recent contribution by Michael Whitby, who argued that the traditional chronology, which places a Roman invasion of Persarmenia in 543 and a Persian siege of Edessa in 544, should be retained. The article seeks to demonstrate that the grounds he offers are inadequate and concludes therefore that the earlier dating…

The Emperor, the People and Urban Violence in the Fifth and Sixth Centuries
There are many reasons for returning to a field in which I was involved twenty years ago, when I brought out a detailed analysis of the Nika riot. Given the theme of this volume, however, it would be of little relevance to focus too narrowly on the events of January 532. 1 Instead, I propose to examine at a more general level the dynamics of riots in the fifth and sixth centuries, seeking in particular to discern what factors were involved, and m…
Procopius and the past in sixth-century Constantinople

The Chronicle of Pseudo-Zachariah Rhetor: Church and War in Late Antiquity
The Chronicle attributed to Zachariah of Mytilene is one of the most important sources for the history of the church from the Council of Chalcedon in 451 to the early years of the reign of Justinian (527-565). The author who compiled the work in Syriac in A.D. 568/9 drew extensively on the Ecclesiastical History of Zachariah the Rhetor, who later became bishop of Mytilene and ended up giving his name to the whole work. But Zachariah’s Ecclesiasti…

Recent work on Procopius and the composition of Wars VIII
This article offers a survey of research on Procopius over the last six years as well as going into detail on certain disputed questions in Procopian scholarship; special attention is paid to the discussion of the Buildings in Antiquité Tardive 8 (2000). In particular, the author argues in detail for dating Wars VIII to 552 and for maintaining an early date for the composition of the Buildings . He upholds the traditional view of Procopius as a l…

The dates of Procopius’ works
The writings of Procopius have long been a subject of controversy. First there were disputes over the authorship of the Anecdota , which finally was assigned to Procopius. Then arose the question of when his various works were written, sparking a debate which still attracts scholarly attention; this paper aims to contribute to this debate, while extending the scope of the discussion to cover all Procopius’ later works. It may be noted further tha…
