The new digital technologies have become an effective tool for researchers in different fields. Historians and archaeologists who are studying Greek and Roman Libya have benefited from technical developments in presenting different kinds of data, particularly relating to the epigraphy and toponymy of Libya. They have recently published several resources, and are working on more. This study presents the story of how scholars have collected a varie…

  • The rhetoric of Kekaumenos 1

    Charlotte Roueche•CHAPTER•Rhetoric in Byzantium•2017

Since their first appearance the Consilia et Narrationes ascribed to Kekaumenos have been warmly received, not least because of the simple directness of their style. As one scholar has observed, 'it is dangerous to underestimate the rhetoricity of Kekaumenos'. Kekaumenos provides no encomia, since his gnomai are normally unattributed. As has been said, Robert Browning used the example of Kekaumenos when discussing Byzantine literacy. The Byzantin…

    Charlotte Roueche•ARTICLE•Antiquité Tardive•2007•Cited by: 3

With Volume 14 The Cambridge Ancient History concludes its story. This latest volume embraces the wide range of approaches and scholarship which have in recent decades transformed our view of Late Antiquity. In particular, traditional political and social history has been enormously enhanced by integrating the rich evidence of Christian writing, and the constantly expanding results of archaeological research. A picture emerges of a period of cons…

  • The Functions of the Governor in Late Antiquity

    Charlotte Roueche•ARTICLE•Antiquité Tardive•1998•Cited by: 29

  • Roman Inscriptions 1991–95

Open Access•Richard Gordon, Joyce Reynolds et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1997•References: 85

This survey is intended primarily to assess the impact on Roman studies in general of recent work in Roman epigraphy — whether newly published inscriptions, revised editions, or texts that have been reconsidered or newly analysed in the light of specific themes. We mean to draw attention to those epigraphic studies that make a significant contribution, in particular, to Roman history. Hence the considerable space we devote below to the newly publ…

  • Roman Inscriptions 1986–90

Open Access•Richard Gordon, Mary Beard et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Roman Studies•1993•References: 40

This survey does not aim at completeness. It is a personal selection, on the one hand, of recent epigraphic work which is of significance and interest to an ancient historian, and, on the other hand, of those epigraphic ‘tools of the trade’ which are important for anyone trying to interpret an inscription. But we start with some more narrowly epigraphic topics. If the death of Louis Robert and concern for the future of the Bulletin épigraphique o…

This article has been engendered by yet another important discovery made during the current excavations at Aphrodisias in Caria, of a unique series of acclamatory texts in honour of a local benefactor, Albinus. The texts were inscribed, probably in the first half of the sixth century, on the twenty columns of the west portico of the Agora, nineteen of which survive. They provide relatively little information either about Albinus or about the hist…

Bury was particularly concerned with the subdivision of the provinces; yet that particular reform has continued to be ascribed almost wholly to Diocletian, on the au…
