  • Discourse on space and place in the Blue Lagoon reviews

    C Phua, Mehmet Şeremet•ARTICLE•Current Issues in Tourism•2026

Wellness tourism often evokes a space for relaxation. However, in-person experiences sometimes fall short of that expectation. Incorporating the concepts of space and place in Expectancy Discrepancy Theory, we examine how tourists construct their reviews of Blue Lagoon Iceland (BLI). Using discourse analysis, we study 1130 one-star and two-star TripAdvisor reviews between 2009 and 2024. Our analysis shows how reviewers built their complaints agai…

  • Featuring place in Singapore hotel quarantine vlogs

    Fiona G Cheyney, C Phua•ARTICLE•Geography•2025

Getting to know a place, one often learns about its geographical location and composition as well as its history and representation. Through vlogs (video blogs), we can learn about a place in a dynamic format. In this instance, place is both the site of interest and a setting for vloggers to express a personal opinion. In addition, how the place is featured and used in the video adds to the visual complexity. By focusing on the case of Singapore …

  • Gazing at heterotopia: Touristed landscapes as contested spaces in Kaş, Türkiye

    C Phua, Mehmet Şeremet•ARTICLE•Geography•2025

The concept of the ‘tourist gaze’ encapsulates the importance of visual culture in tourism. Even as visitors are systematically guided in their viewing of tourist attractions, what they see does not always align with what they expect to see. This is particularly evident within touristed landscapes. This article uses the notion of heterotopia to explore contested and diverse experiences of tourist sites. Adopting a visual perspective on tourist si…

    C J Huang, Cheery Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Visual landscapes mark location and representation. When considering Argentine Chinatown, its visual markings reflect stereotypic Chinese elements, hybridisation with local culture, and the ‘invasion’ of space. These visuals help locate and ‘authenticate’ the place, thereby legitimising tourists’ gaze. They also provide clues to its past and future direction. Visual landscapes are not only aesthetic place-markers but are also the embodiment of th…

    Mehmet Şeremet, C Phua et al.•ARTICLE•Gender Place & Culture•2023•Cited by: 2•References: 20

In this paper, we frame women’s experiences in post-disaster recovery housing to highlight the differential distribution of their vulnerabilities. While studies have reported women’s resilience in their new residence, their social vulnerability is often exacerbated in post-disaster recovery housing as they disproportionately shoulder the familial responsibilities with limited resources. We collected and analyzed 350 face-to-face interviews with w…

  • Gendering graffiti in Brazil

    C Phua•ARTICLE•Visual Studies•2020

Gender expressions in a person’s daily rituals or representations in the media are critical in understanding gender relations. Studies on representations have generally focused those presented in textbooks and in advertisements. However, studies rarely examine gender representation in graffiti. In his analysis of advertisements, Goffman argues that advertisers do not create the ritualised expressions they employ but draw upon what we already know…
