  • On Greek Intellectuals and the Roman Emperor Cult

    Open Access•Kostas Buraselis•ARTICLE•Mythos•2020•References: 2

The stance of Greek intellectuals towards the idea and the practice of Roman emperor cult has been often examined, with the main result that the complacent, conformist attitude of these subjects of the Empire has been ascertained (thus in a still basic study by G.W. Bowersock, 1973). A new scrutiny of the available evidence, however, spots also serious reserves in that circle towards the real content of emperor worship at least since the Antonine…

  • Ethnos and Koinon: Studies in Ancient Greek Ethnicity and Federalism

Hans Beck, Kostas Buraselis et al.•BOOK•Ethnos and Koinon•2019

The ethnic turn has led to a paradigm shift in Classics and Ancient History. In Greek history, it toppled the traditional view that the various ethnos states of the Classical and Hellenistic periods drew on a remote pedigree of tribal togetherness. Instead, it appears that those leagues were built on essentially changing, flexible, and relatively late constructions of regional identities that took shape most often only in the Archaic period. The …

And, did everyone subscribe to the same blueprint of ethnicized arguments? The contributions to this volume explore the lived and often contradictory experience between tribal belonging and political integration

  • Federalism in Greek Antiquity

    Open Access•H P Beck, Jonathan M Hall et al.•BOOK•Federalism in Greek Antiquity•2015

The world of ancient Greece witnessed some of the most sophisticated and varied experiments with federalism in the pre-modern era. In the volatile interstate environment of Greece, federalism was a creative response to the challenge of establishing regional unity, while at the same time preserving a degree of local autonomy. To reconcile the forces of integration and independence, Greek federal states introduced, for example, the notion of propor…

  • The Ptolemies, the Sea and the Nile: Studies in Waterborne Power

Open Access•Kōstas Mpurazelēs, Kostas Buraselis et al.•BOOK•Ptolemies, the Sea and the Nile•2013

With its emphasis on the dynasty's concern for control of the sea – both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea – and the Nile, this book offers a new and original perspective on Ptolemaic power in a key period of Hellenistic history. Within the developing Aegean empire of the Ptolemies, the role of the navy is examined together with that of its admirals. Egypt's close relationship to Rhodes is subjected to scrutiny, as is the constant threat of pirac…

  • Constitutio Antoniniana

    Open Access•Kostas Buraselis•CHAPTER•The Encyclopedia of Ancient History•2012

Under the term Constitutio Antoniniana (C.A.), “(imperial) decision of Antoninus,” we have come to understand the official act (probably 212 CE ) of the second Severan emperor Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, nicknamed Caracalla, to grant the Roman citizenship to all (or nearly all) free inhabitants of the Roman Empire who had not yet possessed this status.

  • Appended Festivals

    Kostas Buraselis•CHAPTER•Greek and Roman Festivals•2012

From the Hellenistic period on, various Greek civic festivals in honour of traditional deities have been coordinated or even combined with similar expressions of the ruler cult. The usual results were festivals under a joint name, such as ‘Dionysia and Demetrieia’. These latter ‘appended’ festivals meant — practically and/or ideologically — a supplementary but no less important part of the whole festivity in the cities that instituted them. They …
