Researching the Aftermath of Slavery in Mainland East Africa
This article examines ethical, practical, and methodological challenges in researching the aftermath of slavery in continental East Africa away from the coastal plantation belt. Interest in post-slavery there is recent and inspired by the apparent contrast with West Africa, where the issue is much more salient. The Zigua-speaking cultivators of northeastern Tanzania experienced a prolonged ecological and subsistence crisis between 1880 and 1940.1 Devastating famines which occurred in 1884-1885, 1894-1896, 1898-1900, 1907-1908, 1916-1918, 1925 and 1932-1935 punctuated this period of declining food security.
