The discursive resilience of university rankings
If there is one thing all university rankings have in common, it is that they are the target of widespread criticism. This article takes the many challenges university rankings are facing as its point of departure and asks how they navigate their hostile environment. The analysis proceeds in three steps. First, we unveil two modes of ranking critique, one drawing attention to negative effects, the other to methodological shortcomings. Second, we …
The institutionalization of rankings in higher education: Continuities, interdependencies, engagement
In this article, we introduce the special issue of Higher Education that centers on the question of the institutionalization of rankings in higher education. The article has three parts. In the first part, we argue that the grand narratives such as globalization and neoliberalism are unsatisfactory as standalone explanations of why and how college and university rankings become institutionalized. As a remedy, we invite scholars to pay closer atte…
The Janus Face of Valuation: Global Performance Indicators as Powerful and Criticized Public Measures
The article conceptualizes global performance indicators as public measures that are powerful but also receive a wide range of criticism. Global performance indicators derive their power from combining three analytically distinct elements: (a) commensuration (comparing performances on a common metric), (b) visual simplification (presenting performances in an appealing format), and (c) serialization (framing performance as a continuous developing …

Challenging Valuations: How Rankings Navigate Contestation
Accounts of why rankings are pervasive features of the modern world focus mostly on their properties as valuation devices that, upon entering the public sphere, exert pressure on the ranked. In doing so, however, research tends to overlook the important role played by the different types of organizations that produce rankings. To remedy this, the article draws from a qualitative study consisting of semi-structured interviews with members of these…
The Organizational Engine of Rankings: Connecting “New” and “Old” Institutionalism
When explaining the ubiquity of rankings, researchers tend to emphasize macro or contextual phenomena, such as the power of or the trust in numbers, neoliberal forces, or a general spirit of competition. Meanwhile, the properties of rankers are rarely, if at all, taken into account. In contrast to the received wisdom, we argue that the institutionalization of rankings in different fields is also contingent upon another, often-neglected factor: Ov…

How Rankings Produce Competition: The Case of Global University Rankings
Visualisieru…
Toward Permeable Boundaries of Organizations
The classical concept of organizations as comprising solitary 'walled-in' actors with clear operational boundaries is increasingly being challenged. On the one hand, established organizational forms have been supplemented by a whole variety of new ones that only partially exhibit their properties and that frequently embed single organizations in national or transnational networks; furthermore, it is often not clear who the members of an organizat…
