Examining the Relationship Between Pet Ownership and Prosocial Behaviors Among Early Adolescents
INTRODUCTION: Prior literature within the field of human-animal interaction has illuminated the potential impact of companion animals on prosocial behaviors. This study explores pet ownership association with both adolescent self-reported and parent-reported adolescent engagement in prosocial behavior, using a large dataset of adolescents in the United States, collected between the years of 2019-2022. Measurement of attachment in human-animal interaction research
Researchers in the field of human-animal interaction often investigate the construct of the human-animal bond in order to measure contextual information about companion-animal relationships beyond simply living with a pet. This practice allows researchers to go beyond a simple manifest variable (e.g., dog-owning vs. cat-owning participants) to investigate how specific relationships with companion animals may impact outcomes. However, the current …
Effects of Childcare Hands-On Gardening on Preschoolers’ (3–5 Years) Physical Activity in Semi-Arid Climate Zone
How hands-on gardening impacts behaviors including healthy eating and physical activity during early childhood can be of critical importance for preventing the early onset of obesity. This study investigates how participating in hands-on gardening impacts preschoolers' (3-5 years old) physical activity (measured by accelerometers) in childcare centers in the semi-arid climate zone. The research was conducted in eight licensed childcare centers lo…

The impact that companion animals may have on adolescent engagement in sports and other activities is currently unclear. This study aimed to clarify the extent to which companion animal type impacts family involvement in sports and other a…
Riding into Health: A Case Study on an Equine-Assisted Childhood Obesity Intervention
In this article, we present an exploratory case study that describes the initial outcomes of the Equine-Assisted Positively Fit (EAPF) program. Children with obesity and their caregivers were recruited to participate in the eight-session program. Results indicated that treatment completers ( n = 2) had a decrease in fat mass and fat mass percentage and an increase in fat-free mass and fat-free mass percentage. Moreover, results from accelerometer…

What Are Women's Rights Good For? Contesting and Negotiating Gender Cultures in Southern Africa
Currently, feminist activists are engaged in problematizing and reframing "rights" claims in southern Africa. This article discusses three cases of such activism, all of which show the limitations but also the potential of using rights claims to transform gender cultures and gain economic and gender justice. These cases involve the successful challenge to the gender discriminatory 1982 Botswana Citizenship Act; the policy shift of Women and Law i…
Feminism and Social Democracy in Botswana

Women’s Rights Movements as a Measure of African Democracy
The currently dominant neoliberal narrative of democratization in Africa is silent on women, focussing (as have the dominant narratives on colonialism and nationalism before it) on conflicts between male elites. This paper, using the case of Botswana, is intended as a contribution to a counternarrative of democratization that focuses on women’s groups, along with trade unions, civic groups and other popular forces, as a basis for “democratization…
