Judah and Samaria in Postmonarchic Times: Essays on Their Histories and Literatures
In eleven historical, literary, and theological essays, Gary N. Knoppers elucidates the shifting character of Judean-Samarian relations in Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman times. Engaging history, law, and narrative, these essays are vital to understanding early Jewish and Samaritan religion and scriptural interpretation.
Judah and Samaria in Postmonarchic Times: Essays on Their Histories and Literatures
Focusing on Judean-Samarian interactions in Persian, Hellenistic, and Roman times, Gary N. Knoppers explores both commonalities and differences, rivalries and relationships, as these communities engaged one another in greater depth and complexity than scholars have previously thought. Some essays elucidate archaeological and epigraphic discoveries (Jerusalem, Mt. Gerizim excavations and inscriptions), while others illumine Jewish (Ezra, Chronicle…
Nahum Habakkuk Zephaniah
The distinctiveness of this commentary lies in its consistent rotation between synchronic and diachronic views. This double perspective is directed toward the three prophetic books as a single entity, toward each individual book, and toward the interpretation of each pericope. The result is a sophisticated picture, on the one hand of the structure and intention of the texts in their final form, and on the other hand of their compositional history…
Covenant in the Persian Period: From Genesis to Chronicles
The Northern Context of the Law-Code in Deuteronomy
It has been long recognized that Deuteronomy evinces a strong emphasis on Israelite identity and the solidarity and kinship shared by all members of the larger Israelite community. My essay deals with the two sets of directions about public liturgies that bracket the central law collection of Deuteronomy (12:2-26:15). Each of these two sets of instructions about Israelite conduct upon entering the land remands the Israelites to the area of Sheche…
Covenant in the Persian period: From Genesis to Chronicles
The 22 essays in this new and comprehensive study explore how notions of covenant, especially the Sinaitic covenant, flourished during the Neo-Babylonian, Persian, and early Hellenistic periods. Following the upheaval of the Davidic monarchy, the temple's destruction, the disenfranchisement of the Jerusalem priesthood, the deportation of Judeans to other lands, the struggles of Judeans who remained in the land, and the limited returns of some Jud…
The Theory and Practice of Textual Criticism
Jews and Samaritans: The Origins and History of Their Early Relations
Even in antiquity, writers were intrigued by the origins of the people called Samaritans, living in the region of ancient Samaria (near modern Nablus). The Samaritans practiced a religion almost identical to Judaism and shared a common set of scriptures. Yet the Samaritans and Jews had little to do with each other ... Covering over a thousand years of history, this book makes an important contribution to the fields of Jewish studies, biblical stu…

The Pentateuch as Torah: New Models for Understanding Its Promulgation and Acceptance
Since antiquity, the five books of Moses have served as a sacred constitution, foundational for both Jews and Samaritans. However long the process of accepting the Pentateuch as authoritative tōrâ (“instruction”) took, this was by all accounts a monumental achievement in the history of these peoples and indeed an important moment in the history of the ancient world. In the long development of Western societies, the Pentateuch has served as a majo…
The Pentateuch as Torah: New Models for Understanding Its Promulgation and Acceptance
"This interdisciplinary collection of essays on the promulgation of the Pentateuch and its acceptance as authoritative Torah includes contributions from international specialists on the Hebrew Bible, Dead Sea Scrolls, Septuagint, Samaritan history, colonial theory, Mediterranean studies, the Elephantine Island texts, and comparative legal history. The material gathered here is a state-of-the-art presentation of the issues, raising new questions a…

Mt. Gerizim and Mt. Zion: A study in the early history of the Samaritans and Jews
This article explores how a new and very important development in the study of ancient Samaria sheds light on the import of two Judean texts written during the late Achaemenid or early Hellenistic era. The study begins with a discussion of the recent excavation of a large temple complex on Mt. Gerizim largely dating to the Hellenistic era, but with some material evidence stretching back to the Persian era. This remarkable discovery helps to answe…

Ancient Near Eastern Royal Grants and the Davidic Covenant: A Parallel
This essay reviews and challenges the widely accepted thesis of Moshe Weinfeld that the Davidic promises are patterned after ancient Near Eastern land grants. Examination of proposed parallels between Davidic promises and royal grants under three rubrics-structure, language, and unconditionality-reveals that Davidic promises and royal grants are not analogous. Regarding the first issue, the problematic and changing structure of land grants preclu…

Treaty, Tribute List, or Diplomatic Letter: KTU 3.1 Reexamined
Of considerable importance to the interpretation of KTU 3.1 are a number of Akkadian diplomatic texts-RS 11.732, 17.227, 17.382-which parallel KTU 3.1 in listing the amount, kind, and designation of tribute. Nougayrol and Dietrich and Loretz argue that the correspondence between KTU 3.1 and RS 17.227 is pervasive, that the two documents constitute one treaty in two versions. In contrast, Gordon believes KTU 3.1 is a tribute list. This study demon…
Dissonance and Disaster in the Legend of Kirta
Since its publication in 1936, the Ugaritic legend of Kirta has elicited a great variety of interpretations. It is here suggested that the Kirta legend represents an intellectual engagement with sacral kingship, interrogating the nature, conditions, and effects of the monarchy as a major institution in divine-human affairs. The author exposes the ambiguities inherent within sacral kingship and plays on its problems. Traditional royal ideology emp…
