    Philostratus' Vita Apollonii is structured by the stylistic distinction, older than Aristotle, between composed and improvisational rhetorics. Philostratus extends this bipolar theory of rhetorical styles to define for Apollonius a religious discourse beyond sophistic rhetoric, marked by silence and oracular speech.
