Canadian Society of Patristic Studies/Association canadienne des études patristiques (CSPS-ACÉP)
This short tribute in honour of the fiftieth anniversary of the Canadian Society of Patristic Studies/Association canadienne des études patristiques (CSPS-ACÉP) serves as a preface to the article by Annette Yoshiko Reed, entitled, "Expanding Patristic perspectives: Thinking with fifty years of the Canadian Society of Patristic Studies/Association Canadienne des Études Patristiques
Considerations of Age and Demography for Early Christ Groups
Age is an integral part of social interaction and identity but has been largely neglected in studies of early Christ groups. An understanding of the demography (the study of population patterns) of first century Roman cultures in the ancient Mediterranean is critical if one is to avoid, as much as possible, anachronistic and ethnocentric understandings of age in early Christ groups. Comparative aging
In a late first century CE Christian text, we find a rather odd sentiment: a widow should be “put on a list” if she is “not less than sixty” (1 Timothy 5:9). In this article, questions around these phrases form a basis for a comparison of age and aging in the ancient Mediterranean and in the author’s own twenty-first century Canadian context, exploring universal aspects of aging and culturally conditioned understanding of age. Comparisons of life…
New Testament Apocrypha
The canonical texts of the New Testament are well known and studied, but the variety and number of extant early Christian noncanonical texts, also known as New Testament Apocrypha, have not been as widely recognized. Thanks to the stellar work of numerous translators and the editorial work of Tony Burke, many more of these texts are now available with introductions in English translation through two volumes (soon to be three) of New Testament Apo…
Storytelling, orality and embodiment in New Testament Apocrypha
In this review of the second volume of New Testament Apocrypha: More Noncanonical Scriptures, published by Eerdmans in 2020 and edited by Tony Burke, the author praises the clarity and rigour of the translations and their introductions in the volume. She highlights the value of these texts for modern readers as a glimpse of the range of stories and imaginative thought of early Christians, particularly considering what these texts might reveal thr…
Inspiring Intergenerational Relationships
The Christian New Testament contains surprisingly few references to age and aging, and what readers do encounter is usually read through the lens of their own experiences and assumptions about age. In this article, I approach the New Testament from my vantage point as a historian of early Christianity to glean meaning relevant for aging and intergenerational relationships today by engaging a contextual approach to the reader and the text. I begin…
