  • Rebellion or love? Literature, two humanisms and the exercise of strong evaluation

    Open Access•Marc P Lalonde•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2025•References: 11

According to John Gardner, true art entails the search for and examination of values. Some forms of literature do forward narratives that provoke a response to, and entail an assessment of, different moral values as an essential part of their art . This claim holds true for the novels The Outsider by Albert Camus and Such Is My Beloved by Morely Callaghan. Both are classic modern works of fiction that contribute to a search for values. Marc P. • Moral Authenticity in a Turbulent Age: Charles Taylor and the Diary of Etty Hillesum

    Open Access•Marc P Lalonde•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2019•References: 15

This paper explores the relation between the moral philosophy of Charles Taylor and the wartime diary of Etty Hillesum. Written in Amsterdam between 1941 and 1942, Hillesum's diary records her effort to construct a meaningful identity in relation to the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. That effort, I want to claim, is clarified via an interface with Taylor's notion of "authenticity." Taylor argues that authenticity constitutes a moral ideal th…

Their examination of synagogue …

    Open Access•Marc P Lalonde•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•2005•References: 8

This essay begins and ends with the question: what is the meaning and purpose of religious thought today? In response to this query, the paper outlines the critical significance of the socio-cultural fragmentation of contemporary religious thought by: first, reclaiming an ethical moment within the critical theory of Max Horkheimer; second, justifying the significance of that moment by expanding our understanding of morality as explained by Charle…

  • On the moral-existential facet of religious studies today

    Open Access•Marc P Lalonde•ARTICLE•Studies in Religion/Sciences…•1997

This article argues that part of the purpose of religious studies is to facilitate the reflexive exploration of moral-existential frameworks of religious meaning in view of contemporary socio-cultural tensions, problems and contradictions. I argue for a non-theological view of religious studies capable of examining issues of religious truth, value and purpose, though quite different from theology. The first section of this study takes up the mora…

  • The changing role of the Prime Minister's Office

    Open Access•Marc Lalonde, Marc P Lalonde•ARTICLE•Canadian Public Administration•1971•Cited by: 8

It is impossible to understand how the Prime Minister's Office has evolved without a clear appreciation of the prime minister's ‘office’ ‐ his powers, responsibilities and influence. By the ‘office’ of prime minister, I am referring not only to his role as shaped by constitutional custom and usage, but also to his contemporary leadership role in its widest context. The ‘raison d'être’ of the Prime Minister's Office is to serve the prime minister …
