Max Weber as Professor: Freiburg and Heidelberg, 1894–1903
Five of the seven volumes in MWG III, devoted to Weber’s academic lecturing, present notes from his teaching on political economy, finance and economic policy in Freiburg and Heidelberg before 1900. Detailed historical understanding of these subjects during this period in Germany is today limited, rendering Weber’s teaching relatively inaccessible for modern readers. All the same, the raw state of this material lends us a window into Weber’s read…
The Production and Reproduction of Economic Science
Before political economy: Debate over grain markets, dearth and pauperism in England, 1794–96
During the 1790s Britain experienced a series of poor harvests which, given an expanding population and wartime disruption to the European grain trade, caused sudden and rapid increases in the domestic price of wheat. In modern discussion of Corn and Poor Laws the severity of these fluctuations has been obscured by the use of annual average grain prices, despite weekly county prices being available from 1771 as published in the London Gazette. We…
General Economic History
Sociologist, historian and political economist, Max Weber is one of the most important thinkers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His astonishing range and penetrating insights resulted in many influential books spanning religion, society, politics, and economics, permanently affecting the direction of the social sciences. General Economic History, published in 1923 (three years after Weber's death) and compiled from meticulous notes tak…

Capitalism, Contingency and Economic Development
The idea that Weber is a theorist of “rationalisation” can suggest that he thought of processes as being essentially unidirectional, homogenising; that there was some kind of underlying, progressive logic to social, political and economic changes. I show that in the last year of his life, Weber wrote about the emergence and transformation of “capitalism”, and that, when coupled with his increasing emphasis on the concept of Chance, his understand…
FramingThe Wealth of Nations
When The Wealth of Nations was published in 1776, this was recognized as another work by the author of The Theory of Moral Sentiments, a work that Smith extended and revised through six editions until the year he died, in 1790. Smith had in 1776 refrained from elaborating arguments that he had already made in 1759, and this was likely well understood by his contemporaries. But by the later 1790s The Theory of Moral Sentiments was no longer so wid…
How I found my way to Max Weber
Moral Economy and Market Order
In 1971 E. P. Thompson introduced the idea of popular disturbances related to the high price of bread as articulations of a moral economy embodying conceptions of social justice. Adam Smith is treated as representative of a new political economy opposed to these conceptions, which in time subdued this “moral economy.” Thompson’s construction of a moral economy remains valuable, but he was mistaken in his approach to political economy. Thomas Robe…
The ‘system of natural liberty’: Natural order in the Wealth of Nations
It has long been recognised that Adam Smith’s Wealth of Nations (1776) advances a ‘system of natural liberty’ in seeking to account for the ‘nature and causes of the wealth of nations.’ This is not however a theme that is explored or explained in the early sections of the book; in fact, not until Book IV, Ch. ix does Smith give his most expansive account of what he might mean by this term. This paper examines this chapter in detail to determine t…

Martin Meisel. Chaos Imagined: Literature, Art, Science
Martin Meisel’s Chaos Imagined: Literature, Art, Science is a book about nothing. For as the author explains, etymologically, the word “chaos” is linked to the Greek idea of a gap. Meisel takes as his example Hesiod’s Theogeny, in which darkness and night emerged out of chaos, which “is imagined as a negative presence, a gap, a discontinuity in the blankness, a momentous something precisely because it is an instantiating hole in the absence of th…
The Colonial Office and British Development Economics, 1940-60
The British Colonial Office was responsible for the administration of all the various elements of the British Empire (except India) from 1854 until its final merger with the Foreign Office in the mid-1960s, but only in the 1940s did it begin to take an active interest in social and economic development. Herbert Frankel was appointed in 1946 to a new Oxford chair in Colonial Economic Affairs, and during the 1940s and early 1950s Peter Bauer conduc…

Peasantry' as an economic category
This paper is concerned to challenge the category 'peasantry' as defining a distinct and general type of economy. It is divided into three sections: i. an examination of the work of Lenin and Kautsky on capitalism in agriculture which shows that they investigated economies in which peasant production was important without using such a concept; ii. it is argued that no rigorous concept of a 'peasant' mode or 'peasant' relations of production can b…

Prussian agriculture-German politics: Max Weber 1892-7
While Weber's interest in prussian agrarian policy in the 1890s is generally recognised, there have been no serious attempts to examine the extensive writings that were the outcome of this interest. This article seeks to provide an outline of the issues arising in this work and present them in terms of teh changing structure of Wilhelmine politics. Further, it is s hown that important 'methodological' issues surface in these writings which form t…
The political economy of modernity: Foucault's Collège de France lectures of 1978 and 1979
Michel Foucault's 1978 and 1979 lecture courses at the Collège de France were first published in 2004, and have recently been published in English translation. Their chief theme is the political economy of modernity, and this article examines the manner in which Foucault constructed his conception of governmentality in two phases: the political economy of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century Europe and the origins of twentieth-century German ordol…

Talcott Parsons as translator of Max Weber's basic sociological categories
The first four chapters of Max Weber's Economy and Society presented by Talcott Parsons in 1947 as Theory of Social and Economic Organization present a coherent and complete analysis of social, economic and political structures based upon a consistent theory of social action and its understanding. Parsons did not see them this way. His lengthy introduction sought to insert them into his own "action frame of reference", and his rearrangement of th…
Durkheim and the Birth of Economic Sociology
An illuminating account of the development of Durkheim's economic sociology Émile Durkheim's work has traditionally been viewed as a part of sociology removed from economics. Rectifying this perception, Durkheim and the Birth of Economic Sociology is the first book to provide an in-depth look at the contributions made to economic sociology by Durkheim and his followers. Philippe Steiner demonstrates the relevance of economic factors to sociology …

Economic property and the theorisation of ground rent
The theory of capitalist ground rent that Marx develops in CapitalVol. III is customarily regarded as either unproblematic, or susceptible to technical improvements. This paper argues that there are profound difficulties in Marx's theorization of ground rent and the relation of landed property to capitalist production in agriculture, and draws attention to the concepts of 'property' and 'commodity' that Marx deploys. What is Social Economics
During the 1950s at the latest, Max Weber became a ‘founding father’ of sociology, chiefly on the basis of a restricted set of canonical writings and without any consideration of his wider relationships to law, economics and politics. During the last ten years of his life he was responsible for a major collaborative work, the Grundriss der Sozialökonomik—Outline of Social Economics. The title was of his own choosing; and so it might well shed new…

Remarks on the theoretical significance of Marx's Grundrisse
In recent years much play has been made with the significance of the Grundrisse for the reinterpretation of Marx's thought. The text has been represented as a vindication of those who have treated Marx's work as a relatively direct development from the early writings of 1843 and 1844, and a rebuttal of those who have sought to establish that Marx's later works constitute a radically distinct project from that of his youth, the two projects being …
Das Adam Smith Problem” and the origins of modern Smith scholarship
The "Adam Smith Problem" is the name given to an argument that arose among German scholars during the second half of the nineteenth century concerning the compatibility of the conceptions of human nature advanced in, respectively, Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759) and his Wealth of Nations (1776). During the twentieth century these arguments were forgotten but the problem lived on, the consensus now being that there is no such incomp…

On the production and structuring of scientific knowledges
Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions has contained within it a series of discrepancies, which combine to render impossible the actual theorising of changes in scientific knowledges, and their foundation in a break with a previous theoretical ideology. Reading trade in the wealth of nations
Economic analysis identifies comparative, rather than absolute, advantage as the basis of international trade, a distinction first thought to have been clearly made by David Ricardo in his Principles of Political Economy and Taxation (1817). Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations (1776) is thought to have failed to make this distinction, instead treating foreign trade principally as a "vent" for surplus domestic produce. However, Smith's underlying argum…

Museums and Globalization
The chapter explores the diffusion of museums around the globe. It draws upon world systems and globalization theory to argue that we can understand this as the diffusion of an institutionalized form which seeks to realize the world in its organization. This is explored particularly in relation to cosmological models of order in early museums and the role of museums in the process of nation building; and the argument is illustrated through contem…
