  • Child and caregiver language in two different play contexts

Open Access•Erika Brady, Sudha Arunachalam•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Linguistic…•2025

This study examined the types of utterances that parents use when speaking to their 36-month-old children (US-based, English-speaking, N = 18) in two tasks: a semi-naturalistic free-play task and a highly structured goal-oriented task, and if utterance type was associated with child talkativeness. Transcripts of parent-child interactions in the two tasks were coded for pragmatic function. Results revealed that parents produced more directives in …

  • W. Lynwood Montell (1931–2023)

    Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Journal of American Folklore•2024

As a scholar and teacher, W. Lynwood Montell's trademark was the tightly focused study of every aspect of the culture of a specific region, gained through direct observation and contact with everyday individuals in overlooked places. He recalled being scolded by his mother for identifying his home as Tompkinsville, Kentucky, the Monroe County seat, when his birthplace was in fact the tiny settlement of Rock Bridge. From that early age, specificit…

  • Future security threats arising from the UK’s deprivation of citizenship: A model to understand the human rights-security risk landscape

    Open Access•Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Critical Studies on Terrorism•2024•References: 9

Following the collapse of the Islamic State, the issue of "Returning Foreign Fighters" became a dominant global problem. The securitised response adopted by many states is a cause for concern, particularly in relation to human rights. Men, women and children with a range of physical and psychological trauma are now situated in camps across northeastern Syria, posing a complex security threat. The situation in these camps is far from secure, and t…

  • Environmental Virtue Aesthetics

Open Access•Nicole Hall, Nicole A Hall et al.•ARTICLE•The British Journal of Aesthetics•2023•References: 8

How should we characterize the interaction between moral and aesthetic values in the context of environmental aesthetics? This question is important given the urgency of many environmental problems and the particular role played by aesthetic value in our experience of environment. To address this question, we develop a model of Environmental Virtue Aesthetics (EVA) that, we argue, offers a promising alternative to current theories in environmenta…

  • Global Climate Change and Aesthetics

    Open Access•Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Environmental Values•2022

What kinds of issues does the global crisis of climate change present to aesthetics, and how will they challenge the field to respond? This paper argues that a new research agenda is needed for aesthetics with respect to global climate change (GCC) and outlines a set of foundational issues which are especially pressing: (1) attention to environments that have been neglected by philosophers, for example, the cryosphere and aerosphere; (2) negative…

  • Environmental aesthetics: A synthetic review

Open Access•Erika Brady, Jonathan Prior et al.•ARTICLE•People and Nature•2020

The main aim of the article is to provide up‐to‐date knowledge of environmental aesthetics for an interdisciplinary audience, and to signal the importance of research in this area for studying people–nature relationships. Environmental aesthetics has emerged in the last 50 years from the philosophical fields of aesthetics and environmental philosophy. Other disciplinary perspectives have also shaped environmental aesthetics, including landscape a…

  • Aesthetic and spiritual values of ecosystems: Recognising the ontological and axiological plurality of cultural ecosystem ‘services’

Open Access•Nigel Cooper, Erika Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Ecosystem Services•2016

This paper explores spiritual and aesthetic cultural values associated with ecosystems. We argue that these values are not best captured by instrumental or consequentialist thinking, and they are grounded in conceptions of nature that differ from the ecosystem services conceptual framework. To support our case, we engage with theories of the aesthetic and the spiritual, sample the discourse of ‘wilderness’, and provide empirical evidence from the…

  • Adam Smith's ‘Sympathetic Imagination’ and the Aesthetic Appreciation of Environment

    Open Access•Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Journal of Scottish Philosophy•2011•References: 6

This paper explores the significance of Adam Smith's ideas for defending non-cognitivist theories of aesthetic appreciation of nature. Objections to non-cognitivism argue that the exercise of emotion and imagination in aesthetic judgement potentially sentimentalizes and trivializes nature. I argue that although directed at moral judgement, Smith's views also find a place in addressing this problem. First, sympathetic imagination may afford a deep…

  • Aesthetic Regard for Nature in Environmental and Land Art

    Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Ethics Place & Environment•2007•Cited by: 6•References: 7

Recent work in environmental ethics has seen a pragmatic turn that emphasises the importance of developing positive relationships with nature through practices involved in, for example, ecological restoration and community gardens. This article explores whether environmental and land art-making encourages positive aesthetic–moral relationships between nature and humans. It critically examines a particular type of aesthetic objection to these kind…

  • Landscape and value in the work of alfred wainwright (1907 – 1991)

Clare Palmer, Erika Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Landscape Research•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 13

Alfred Wainwright was arguably the best known British guidebook writer of the 20th century, and his work has been highly influential in promoting and directing fell-walking in northern Britain, in particular in the English Lake District. His work has, however, received little critical attention. This paper represents an initial attempt to undertake such a study. We examine Wainwright's work through the lens of the landscape values and aesthetics …

  • The Aesthetics of Agricultural Landscapes and the Relationship between Humans and Nature

    Erika Brady•ARTICLE•Ethics Place & Environment•2006•Cited by: 13•References: 12

The continuum between nature and artefact is occupied by objects and environments that embody a relationship between natural processes and human activity. In this paper, I explore the relationship that emerges through human interaction with the land in the generation and aesthetic appreciation of industrial farming in contrast to more traditional agricultural practices. I consider the concept of a dialectical relationship and develop it in order …

This paper describes our experience of teaching environmental ethics as part of a Philosophy of Conservation field trip to Rum, off the West coast of Scotland. The field trip was formalised into an M. A. Module in 1999. After outlining the educational aims of the module, and how these are implemented in this setting, we indicate some of the key issues in ethics and aesthetics that emerge as we explore two specific conservation sites. • Topiary: Ethics and Aesthetics

Isis Brook, Erika Brady et al.•ARTICLE•Ethics & the Environment•2003

In this paper we discuss ethical and aesthetic questions in relation to the gardening practice of topiary. We begin by considering the ethical concerns arising from the uneasiness some appreciators might feel when experiencing topiary as a manipulation or contortion of natural processes. We then turn to ways in which topiary might cause an 'aesthetic affront' through the humanizing effects of sentimentality and falsification of nature (most often…
