Influencia de las condiciones atmosféricas en las visitas a atractivos culturales e implicaciones frente al cambio climático
How will climate change affect different tourism activities? This study offers an in-depth analysis of the influence of atmospheric conditions on cultural attractions—an essential yet still underexplored segment from this perspective. It examines how meteorological factors shape tourists’ decisions and levels of satisfaction in two major cultural sites on the Iberian Peninsula: the Altamira Museum (Spain) and the Jerónimos Monastery (Portugal). D…
The role of tourism on human-jaguar coexistence in northern Pantanal, Brazil: A conceptual framework in political ecology and more-than-human perspective
A political ecology lens can yield a comprehensive understanding of the factors influencing human-wildlife coexistence within the context of tourism development. Here, we propose a conceptual framework that combines political ecology and more-than-human perspectives to examine power dynamics among diverse stakeholders, including scientists, local communities, NGOs, and non-human entities. This framework is applied to a case study focused on jagua…

It is unclear, however, whether this perception has spread beyond academia and how the pandemic changed the ideology of tourism in society. This article investigates whether the pandemic has boosted and influenced the debate in the European pub…

Characteristics of novel urban vegetation in two Portuguese urban regions
Urban novel ecosystems were sampled across vacant sites in two Portuguese urban regions. The flora were studied with a focus on species’ origin, life form, ecological, chorological and naturalisation types. A multivariate constrained ordination technique was used to identify relationships between plant composition and environmental factors. The vegetation of the two urban regions shows differences, highlighting biome influence, as well as due to …

Cyborg urbanization beyond the human: The construction and ruination of the Matinha gasworks site
Work on cyborg urbanization has unveiled the way in which the city is produced through hybridizations of the human and non-human. However, less attention has been given to the ways by which non-human actors entangle each other without human mediation. On the other hand, literature on urban ruination has explored the agency of the non-human in landscape transformation, however few works have established the link between the processes of ruination …
A podcast on urban ruins, or the aural weaving of theory and field
Making a podcast can be a way to weave together concepts, theories or mere thoughts about places, and the aural sensory experience of being in place. In this short article, we present the NoVOID podcast, an audio podcast on ruins and vacant lands that combines interviews with scholars from various fields of knowledge and field recordings in various sites related to the subjects of the interviews. We discuss four possibilities for generating more-…
Arruinamento e regeneração do espaço edifìcado na metrópole do século XXI: O caso de Lisboa
Ruins and derelict spaces are ubiquitous presences in contemporary cities. Probably because they are seen as undesirable and anomalous elements, scarce attention has been paid to them in urban studies. A theory of modern urban ruin is attempted in this paper. Using the Lisboan metropolitan area (Portugal) as case study, it is argued that dereliction and ruinification are part of the mutability of urban forms imposed by progress. The acceleration …
Visual tourism and post-colonialism: Imaginative geographies of Africa in a Portuguese travel magazine
This paper is about tourism, visual culture, and imperialism in the post-colonial present. International literature on these issues has been especially focused on the experience of British and French post-colonialism. Few studies have addressed this issue regarding other post-colonial realities. This paper runs counter to that fact by analysing the visual touristic discourse produced in the post-colonial Portugal. The paper examines the way the s…
The Cultural Economy of Cities: A Comparative Study of the Audiovisual Sector in Hamburg and Lisbon
This article examines the role that big cities play in an ongoing change towards a ‘global cultural economy’. Starting from Allen Scott’s argument that a handful of urban flagships may benefit from this shift, it looks for an alternative approach to the territorial dimension of the ‘culture-economy nexus’ based on a more complex understanding of urban culture. A broad theoretical discussion of Scott’s ideas, as well as on the key concepts of cult…
