  • Temporal Layering

    Open Access•Ayna B Johansen, Geiger et al.•ARTICLE•Valuation Studies•2025

We investigate how temporality matters in processes of valuation. Taking our empirical point of departure in the case of a novel gene therapy that has been the centre of a heated pricing debate, we explore how the ‘goodness’ of such a pharmaceutical good was negotiated by researchers, patients, pharmaceutical companies and regulators, and how these negotiations were shaped by the mobilisation of past experiences and future expectations. Seeking t…

  • The Best I Could

    Open Access•Ayna B Johansen, Laura E Navne•ARTICLE•Medical Anthropology•2024•Cited by: 1•References: 50

The introduction of personalized medicine marks a shift in pregnancy-related screening, from fetal to maternal health risks putting the pregnant woman's future orientations center stage. Drawing on fieldwork from pregnancy outpatient clinics and 11 interviews with pregnant women diagnosed with gestational diabetes and offered genetic testing, we use their experiences of time to explore how futurity is reshaped by notions of early detection and at…

  • Making Come-Alive and Keeping Un-Alive

    Open Access•Marianne T S Holter, Ottar Ne et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 39

Health interventions delivered online (self-guided web-based interventions) may become more helpful through a person-to-program "working alliance." In psychotherapy, the working alliance signifies a therapeutically useful client-therapist relationship and includes an emotional bond. However, there exist no theories of how program users relate to online programs, or that explain a person-to-program bond theoretically. Addressing this gap, we condu…

  • Getting Change-Space

    Open Access•Marianne T S Holter, Marianne Holter et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Report•2019•References: 4

A promising tool for bettering people’s health is eHealth (or “mHealth”) programs: fully automated, web-based health interventions. However, we know surprisingly little about eHealth’s working mechanisms. One possible working mechanism is that program users benefit from a collaborative “relationship”—a “working alliance”—with the program. Although evidence support the existence of a person-to-program alliance it is unclear if and how it influence…

  • Constructivist Simultaneous Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, Trauma, and Addiction Comorbidity

    Open Access•Ayna B Johansen, Shedeh Tavakoli et al.•ARTICLE•Qualitative Health Research•2017•References: 53

This qualitative case study explored one client's recovery from borderline personality disorder, trauma, and problem gambling. The client attended 18 months of integrative treatment and was followed for 5 years. The study included 106 data points of both client and therapist data. We identified three phases to treatment. First, alliance formation and normalization appeared as mechanisms, and the client experienced dependence. Second, working alli…

  • Adoption and Identity Experiences Among Adult Transnational Adoptees

    Open Access•Farnad J Darnell, Ayna B Johansen et al.•ARTICLE•Adoption Quarterly•2016•Cited by: 9•References: 17

To establish more comprehensive ways to assess transnational adoption adjustment, we need to better understand the adoptive identity experiences of transnational adoptees. We explored adoption identity by describing sociopsychosocial aspects and self experiences related to transnational adoption adjustment in a purposive sample of 16 adult Korean-American adoptees. A qualitative, descriptive analysis resulted in three themes: biological parents, …
