Coverage of recent criticisms of Milgram’s obedience experiments in introductory social psychology textbooks
This article has two purposes: (a) to broaden awareness of recent criticisms of Milgram’s obedience experiments by providing a relatively inclusive review of them interlaced within a discussion of Gina Perry’s main substantive criticisms and (b) to report the findings of our coverage analysis for recent criticisms in current introductory social psychology textbooks. Our findings on coverage of recent criticisms were consistent with those of past …
Analogical transfer in the THOG task
The influences of surface and structural similarity on analogical transfer were examined with 318 undergraduate participants in four experiments using Needham and Amado's (1995) Pythagoras THOG problem as the source problem and Wason's standard abstract THOG task as the target problem. In Experiments 1-3, systematic changes in surface similarity between the source and target problems were introduced by changing the named exemplar, the dimensional…
Geopolitical Discourse, Global Actors and the Spatial Construction of African Union
The development of a discursive formation since 1994 known as the 'African Renaissance' is linked to a new politico-territorial arrangement (African Union) and a continent-wide reconstruction plan (the New Partnership for African Development). A neo-realist analysis is used to explain the contingent relations between agency and discourse in constructing this alternative geopolitical space. This explanation leads to a practical consideration of th…

Instructional effects on responses in Wason's selection task
This study examines the effects of three different violation instructions in the abstract selection task. Margolis (1987) hypothesized different selection patterns for each of these instructions. The results of Expt 1 supported all of his predictions, including one for a large number of not‐ p and not‐ q selections, an extremely infrequent choice for the abstract selection task. In Expt 2, the violation instruction leading to the not‐ p and not‐ …
Scientists and the Selection Task
Contrary to some recent findings reported in this journal by Tweney and Yachanin, the results for twenty scientists on the selection task reflected little understanding of the power of disconfirmatory data in assessing conditionals. In agreement with previous studies by Mahoney and Kimper, and by Kern, Mirels and Hinshaw, confirmatory data were sought more often. The results indicate that scientists' performance is similar to that of undergraduat…
The source of intuitive errors in Wason's THOG problem
Two explanations for the intuitive errors that occur in Wason's THOG problem are considered in this paper. The first claims that subjects make an incorrect assumption about the critical properties involved in the rule, but then proceed to reason logically. The second claims that subjects respond on the basis of non‐logical perceptual matching to the properties in the designated positive instance. The results from three experiments gave unequivoca…
The elusive thematic-materials effect in Wason's selection task
A series of three experiments was conducted to examine the possible facilitating effect of thematic materials in Wason's selection task. The first two experiments attempted to replicate the major studies indicating such an effect. Experiment 1 failed to replicate the findings of Wason & Shapiro (1971), and the results of Johnson-Laird et al. (1972) were not replicated in Expt 2. In support of a memory-cueing hypothesis, improved performance was f…
