  • “Pluriversal Political Economy”: Introduction to the Theme

Maggie Fitzgerald, Ajay Parasram•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•2026

The pluriverse—the idea that distinct ontological starting points give rise to systemic ways of knowing and being—has been establishing itself as a concept in English language scholarship over the

  • Imperial afterlives: Citizenship and racial/caste fragility in Canada and India

    Ajay Parasram, Nissim Mannathukkaren•ARTICLE•Citizenship Studies•2024•References: 32

This paper looks to the historical imbrication of racial and caste supremacy with citizenship, drawing attention to the inherent coloniality of citizenship in post-imperial Canada and India. We examine the transition from explicit to insidious, unofficial forms of institutionalized racial/caste supremacy. Explicit forms of supremacy have established and normalized forms of hierarchy that ascribe tiers of citizenship, even after legal guarantees o…

  • Pluriversal sovereignty and the state of IR

    Open Access•Ajay Parasram•ARTICLE•Review of International Studies•2023

IR proceeds on a Eurocentric ontological assumption that sovereignty has universal validity today. How can IR be decolonised, when in spite of countless examples of the enactment of ‘sovereignty otherwise’, the discipline remains unconcerned with the fact that the logic of sovereignty remains uni -versal. The question is as much political as it is intellectual, because as a discipline, we have allowed the inertia of our professional rhythms to ma…

  • Pathological White Fragility and the Canadian Nation: Pathological white fragility and the Canadian nation

    Ajay Parasram•ARTICLE•Studies in Political Economy•2019•Cited by: 10•References: 11

We are at a critical moment when we must confront the relationship between racial stress and white supremacy in order to provide tools and education to combat the radicalization of young white men in Canada. White fragility insulates structural white supremacy in contemporary ways that fuel resurgent far-Right nationalism by enabling fragile “whites” to define themselves against extreme acts of racial violence while protecting the social infrastr…

  • Global Environmental Harm, Internal Frontiers and Indigenous Protective Ontologies

    Ajay Parasram, L Tilley•CHAPTER•Routledge Handbook of Postcolonial…•2018

This chapter argues for a consideration of global environmental harm from the position of the world's internal frontiers in both settler colonial and former franchise colonial countries. Indigenous survivors of colonial genocide have endured and resisted in large part because of the preservation of their knowledge systems that have been grounded to land in ways that are ontologically distinct from the Western tradition. Western understandings of …

  • The Little Nyonya and Singapore's national self: Reflections on Aesthetics, Ethnicity and Postcolonial State Formation

Jean Michel Montsion, Ajay Parasram•ARTICLE•Postcolonial Studies•2018•Cited by: 3

Singapore’s postcolonial state formation process has combined the appeal/distress of a multiracial society with the nationalistic pride of economic development. In recent years, the city-state has witnessed a revival of Peranakan culture and history, referring to the descendants of early Chinese immigrants who integrated into Indigenous societies before becoming prized mediators for British colonisers in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. We…

  • Becoming the State: Territorializing Ceylon, 1815-1848

    Ajay Parasram•THESIS•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 40

This dissertation studies the political, economic, and cosmological processes through which the idea of "total territorial rule" at the core of the modern state came into being in the context of British colonial rule on the island of Ceylon (Sri Lanka) between 1815 -1848. It develops a decolonial theoretical framework informed by the idea of a "pluriverse" of multiple ontologies to show the empirical and imperial avenues through which the idea of…

  • Erasing Tamil Eelam: De/Re Territorialisation in the Global War on Terror

    Ajay Parasram•ARTICLE•Geopolitics•2012•Cited by: 8

This paper considers the Sri Lanka/Tamil Eelam conflict with attention to how its dramatic end can be explained through postcolonial territorial politics. I argue discourses of postcolonial nationalism and global terrorism aligned along domestic, regional, and international political levels to enable a military victory for the government of Sri Lanka. At the domestic political level, there was a change in government along with a split and defecti…
