    Gunnar Stollberg•ARTICLE•Soziale Systeme•2009

Scholars have explored a broad range of topics affected by the dynamics of globalization. The field of 'medicine', however, has largely been neglected, even though there is a long history of transcontinental diffusion of medical knowledge. This article aims to analyse the latest episode in medical globalization: the diffusion of Asian medical knowledge to the western world. Twenty-nine semistructured interviews with German medical doctors who are…

Since the (re) emergence of heterodox medicine across the Western world, there have been numerous interpretations of this phenomenon by the social sciences. Heterodox patients were said to be active consumers holding postmodern values, while heterodox physicians were described as heretics. Medical doctors taking up heterodox medicine were criticised for acting in their own financial interests. To examine these notions, we selected the most promin…

  • Ayurvedic patients in Germany

    Robert Frank, Robert T Frank et al.•ARTICLE•Anthropology and Medicine•2002•Cited by: 5•References: 21

In the sociology of health and illness, the heterogeneous field of heterodox medicine is often conceptualised as a more or less homogeneous entity. All kinds of heterodox modes of treatment are pooled together in order to discover the heterodox patient. In this way, differences between several heterodox modes of treatment are lost and the emerging picture remains vague. In this paper, we concentrate on one particular mode of treatment: Ayurveda. …

  • Health and Illness in German Workers’ Autobiographies from the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries

    Gunnar Stollberg•ARTICLE•Social History of Medicine•1993

Workers’ autobiographies show a wide variety of medical culture in the nineteenth century. Participating in the formal health system, however, did not exclude contacting rural healers or engaging in magical practices. Hygiene became accepted as a necessary measure. But traditional and socialist ways of healing can be contrasted. The socialists accepted the medicalization of society, while many workers preserved traditional attitudes towards the p…
