Historical Dynamics of the Far Right in the Capitalist World-System
This article develops a longue durée world-systems account of the contemporary resurgence of the far right. Against interpretations that treat far-right politics as an anomaly or a contingent product of authoritarian leaders, we argue that it has recurrently emerged during moments of world hegemonic crisis, when crises of capitalist accumulation deepen, geopolitical rivalry intensifies, and worldwide social unrest begins to generate broader crise…
Constructive destruction as militarized accumulation
This paper examines the transformation of Turkey’s right-wing populist regime in relation to the deepening crisis of the U.S. world hegemony, marked by escalating geopolitical rivalries, growing militarization, and the erosion of the liberal international order. It traces the AKP’s shift from neoliberal developmentalist populism toward a militarized accumulation regime rooted in a military-construction complex, which links the defense industry, l…
The far right in the Global South, geopolitical conflict, and the fascist present
This short article seeks to extend Richard Saull’s analysis of the relationship between capitalism and the far right in his “Capital, Race and Space”, focusing specifically on the Global South and its unique context within neoliberalism and its crises. Saull's framework, which explores the far right's rise through the uneven and combined development of capitalism over an extended historical period, offers valuable insights for understanding these…
Collective Action, Democratization, and Violence
Crisis of capitalism and cycles of right‐wing populism in contemporary Turkey
This paper analyses the right‐wing populist rule of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi (AKP) in Turkey, focusing on the crisis of capitalism, emerging discontent in the rural populations, and opportunities for and obstacles to a successful left‐wing populist mobilisation. We put forward three arguments. First, through an examination of the historical evolution, class‐based and social‐demographic foundations of the ruling right‐wing…
Globalization, crisis and right-wing populists in the Global South
This paper provides a critique of perspectives that see the recent global rise of right-wing populism as a direct reaction to the disastrous effects of neoliberalism. By turning attention to the uneven development of capitalism and international competition, in this paper, I present a distinction between ‘offensive’ and ‘defensive’ types of right-wing populism that take place in different zones of the world economy. Through a comparative analysis…
Capital, Labour and the Global Populist Radical Right
Capitalist development in hostile conjunctures
This article analyses how periods of geopolitical conflict and violence have affected the development of capitalism and class formation in Turkey. We argue that all major episodes of conflict, violence and war-from forced displacement and ethnic cleansing of the non-Muslims in the late 19th and the early 20th century, to Kurdish secessionist warfare in the 1990s and the Syrian Civil War-have become major historical turning points in the developme…

Ballots with Bullets
Territorial Contradictions of the Rise of China
There is debate in the literature regarding whether China can become a new world hegemonic power in the 21st century. Most existing analyses focus on economic aspects of world hegemony-building processes and ignore its macro-political dimensions. This article starts with the premise that reshaping the geopolitical configuration of the inter-state system is an important part of world hegemony-building processes. One of the ways in which previous a…
