Auditory and haptic feedback to train basic mathematical skills of children with visual impairments
Physical manipulatives, such as rods or tiles, are widely used for mathematics learning, as they support embodied cognition, enable the execution of epistemic actions, and foster conceptual metaphors. Counting them, children explore, rearrange, and reinterpret the environment through the haptic channel. Vision generally complements physical actions, which makes using traditional manipulatives limited for children with visual impairments (VIs). Di…
Urban association rules
In this article, we introduce the method of urban association rules and its uses for extracting frequently appearing combinations of stores that are visited together to characterize shoppers’ behaviors. The Apriori algorithm is used to extract the association rules (i.e. if -> result) from customer transaction datasets in a market-basket analysis. An application to our large-scale and anonymized bank card transaction dataset enables us to output …

Local e-government Benchlearning
We claim that local e-services benchmarking studies summarized in indexes do little to enhance city managers' and academics' understanding of actual e-government performance, or to improve the e-services offered by cities. We undertook a different benchmarking approach, focused on learning best pra ctices among cities, in late 2008 and early 2009. A benchlearning methodology (BLM) was developed, and a pilot study with 15 European cities was carri…
On the Conceptualization, Design, and Evaluation of Appealing, Meaningful, and Playable Digital Games for Older People
While older people tend to be regarded as actual, or potential, players of digital games within literature on game studies, human–computer interaction, and gerontechnology, they are also often considered nonavid users of digital technologies. This contradiction prompted us to conduct a literature review, which revealed (a) insufficient involvement of older people within the design of games targeted toward this group and (b) insufficient understan…
Exploring the contribution of prosody and gesture to the perception of focus using an animated agent☆
Benchmarking Del e-Gobierno Local
We present the need to evaluate and compare the development of e-government, and review benchmarking tools and practices. First we discuss the stages of e-government models that are currently in use and discuss the main characteristics and applications. The different e-government benchmarking approaches are analysed, pointing out that e-administration is the more benchmarked e-government area. A more in-depth analysis of the most relevant benchma…
Digital Footprinting
Novel methods and tools are being developed to explore the significance of the new types of user-related spatiotemporal data. This approach helps uncover the presence and movements of tourists from cell phone network data and the georeferenced photos they generate.
Indización automática de vídeo
After an initial discussion of the problems presented by image and video indexing as compared to text indexing, the authors describe some of the basic techniques for automatic video indexing. The content-based retrieval paradigm and some automatic methods for segmentation and key-frame identification are further described. Certain low-level parameters for identifying an image are also introduced. The authors discuss the drawbacks of such automati…
