Assembleias métricas da produção científica
Metrics are present in the daily lives of academic researchers in a variety of ways, leveraging processes of comparison and competition that are accentuated by the phenomenon of platformization. In this article, we carry out a case study of the platform Academia.edu in order to discuss how researchers manage their visibility and online persona based on the dynamics of publication, metrication and circulation of scientific production on this acade…
Infraestruturas, inteligência artificial e outras tecnosoluções
The main goal of this study is to discuss the increasing connection between infrastructural platforms and the ongoing climate crisis. We call the "platformization of climate emergency" the ways the computational, economic and ideological logics of Big Techs like Google affect contemporary socio-environmental challenges. Based on an exploratory study of Google Brazil's "sustainability" actions between 2020 and 2023, we problematize the dual - and …
The Infrastructural Power of Programmatic Advertising Networks
The informational disorder that sprawls through multiple state-nations, exacerbated by violent uprisings and coup attempts such as the US Capitol Storm on January 6th, 2021 and the Brazilian coup attempt on January 8th, 2023, has shed new light on the political economy of disinformation industries. In particular, it brings to the forefront the problem of economic incentives for creating and spreading disinformation. This paper builds on critical …
Crossing the algorithmic 'Red Sea'
This article discusses how Brazilian ubertubers – Uber drivers that manage YouTube channels focused on their riding experience – systematise and make public different ways of knowing surge pricing (SP), an algorithmic-oriented system that uses price adjustments to redistribute drivers across urban space. Taken by the Uber as an instrument to measure and regulate market conditions, SP mediates drivers’ pragmatic and affective daily practices, mate…
One biologist, one million deaths
The article discusses the multiple forms of expertise articulated by a specific kind of digital influencer - online science communicators - during the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil. Our case study focuses on the performance of Atila Iamarino, a PhD in Microbiology that achieved an unprecedented public recognition after predicting, in a YouTube live transmission, that more than a million people could die in the country due to the coronavirus. Assumi…
Mediatized Engagements with Technologies
This article presents the implementation of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) as an example of the increasingly layered mediatization of sports. We argue that, while integrated into the established broadcasting protocols, VAR becomes an object of explicit reflection and popular debate—and increasingly so, when football and its TV coverage are discussed on “technologies of engagement” like Twitter. Combining the concept of mediatization with insig…
Algorithmic Imaginaries in the Making
This paper explores the algorithmic imaginaries associated with Uber's surge pricing, a central mediator of Uber drivers' labor experience. Surge pricing can be described as an algorithmically driven mechanism that uses price adjustments as financial incentives to redistribute the workforce on a territory. Inspired by Critical Algorithm Studies, we argue that this mechanism of governance is not passively incorporated by drivers and that their eve…
Studying 'Live' Cross-Platform Circulation of Images With a Computer Vision Api
Considering the importance of cross-platform circulation of web contents for digital methods-oriented research, in this study we aim to expand the types of digital objects used as ‘traffic tags’ by focusing on static images as traces of online associations. We pursue this goal through a methodological experiment with Google Cloud Vision API, a computing framework for visual content analysis. Its Web Detection module pairs typical computer vision …
Between Partnerships, Infrastructures and Products
Our objective in this paper is to present and discuss the complexification of the process of platformization of journalism by Facebook, triggered by the implementation of the Facebook Journalism Project (FJP), in January 2017. Since then, the platform has been associating itself with new and varied actors, expanding its fronts and positioning itself as a coordinator of activities related to journalistic institutions. At the same time, it continue…
Violent Scenes in Brazil’s 2013 Protests
The article discusses the unique contributions of audiovisual records made by ordinary people during the “June Journeys” protests, which took over the Brazilian streets in June and July 2013. Comparing national TV coverage with the videos made by protestors or by the alternative network Ninja Media, we draw on Jost’s concept of “violent scenes,” on Rancière’s discussion of distribution of the sensible and visibility, as well as Brazilian communic…
Editando a violência
No estudo empírico, apresentamos as dif…
Entre o agrupamento e a comunidade virtual
This paper explores the edition of two articles of Portuguese Wikipedia (on the soccer players “Adriano Leite Ribeiro” and “Ronaldo Luis Nazario de Lima”), seeking to analyze, mostly through quantitative data, the role of editors more engaged (members of “virtual community”) and of the many actors eventually involved in the project (“crowndsourcing”) (Haythornthwaite, 2009). We begin with a theoretical discussion about the characteristics of “com…
