  • Can Climbing Infrastructure Be Considered a Heritage

    Hubert Wierciński•ARTICLE•Anthropos•2024

In this article I ask how does movement infrastructural heritage emerge? What controversies and contrasting interests are associated with it? Might researching such conflicts shed light on the dynamics operating between societal and individual needs and landscapes? With that in mind, I draw upon ethnographic extracts from my research on rock climbing and mountaineering heritage in Poland and, to some extent, in Slovakia. I consider this kinaesthe…

Interweaving an Epidemic World: Fragments of an Ethnography of Primary Health Care in the era of the COVID-19 Pandemic In the article I analyse the responses of Polish primary care practitioners to coronavirus pandemic. I argue that the doctors by – employing their skills and knowledge – ad hoc started to reconstruct their professional world heavily influenced by the virus. I employ a body of literature focused on risk-taking, risk society, and s…

COVID-19 Pandemic: Inventing Skills and Strategies of Action among Primary Care Practitioners In the article, I analyse responses of Polish primary care practitioners to the COVID-19 pandemic. I apply and develop the concepts of skills and enskilment to shed more light on the practices and knowledge-making strategies employed by doctors to cope with the challenges the COVID-19 outbreak has brought to their professional practice

  • Doctors, the Social-Weavers

    Open Access•Hubert Wierciński•ARTICLE•Anthropological Journal of…•2021

This paper explores the problem of knowledge and knowledge making among Polish primary care doctors. Following Kirsten Hastrup and Tim Ingold, I argue that doctors are skilful social-weavers capable of exploring and reconciling various orders of knowledge. Thus, through a diverse set of knowledgeable yarns – originating from professional and state regimes, and embedded in today’s social relationships and economies – doctors are involved in the ar…

  • Etnografia w skale

Topo” to mapa drogi wspinaczkowej i skała poddana obiektywizacji. Dostarcza ona pierwszej wiedzy o danej drodze. Mapy nie są jednak tylko przedstawieniami obiektów przyrodniczych, lecz także reprezentacjami złożonych, ucieleśnionych oraz temporalnych praktyk społecznych. Wspinaczka to zatem pewien cielesny stan i epistemologiczna dyspozycja, dzięki którym wspinacz pokonuje kolejne metry skały. Postawione w artykule pytanie brzmi zatem: jak wytwar…

  • Climbing heritage

    Open Access•Hubert Wierciński•ARTICLE•Anthropology Today•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Climbing is an experience born of the interplay of aesthetics and heritage. Nowadays, climbing attracts people in droves, all eager to join the contest between body and rock. In this article, the author addresses the refined social background of climbing. He asks how the intangible heritage left behind in rocks by generations of climbers manifests itself in the aesthetics of movement and the experiences embedded in the lines that form the climbin…

  • Class, Urbanity and the Environment. The Ethnography of the New Middle/Creative Class Identity in Warsaw's Industrial Suburbs

Open Access•Hubert Wierciński, Natalia Sadowska et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnologia Actualis•2020

In this article we analyse local community-based concepts and practices related to establishing a new middle-class identity when under social and “environmental” pressure. We based our ethnographic inquiry in “RA” – a Warsaw suburb – well-known as a former village but now a location for industry and waste-processing plants. Its vicinity, despite being populated, is polluted by heavy traffic, noise and an unpleasant odour, all of which recently ha…

  • Who are “the Expanded Doctors”? The Ethnography of Professional Self-Identifications in Polish Primary Care

    Open Access•Hubert Wierciński•ARTICLE•Český lid•2020•References: 7

This article is an ethnographic exploration of the responses of doctors to the 1997 healthcare reform in Poland. Based on research carried out among practitioners working in Podstawowa Opieka Zdrowotna (POZ, "Basic Healthcare"), which was established in 1997 and opened up to the market, I demonstrate the newly emerged self-identification of doctors, which can be expressed by the term, "the expanded doctor". Following Elizabeth Dunn's and Asta Von…

  • O zastosowaniu elementów etnografii przedtekstowej w badaniu instytucji opieki medycznej

    Open Access•Hubert Wierciński•ARTICLE•Etnografia Polska•2020•References: 5

In the article I explore the concept of “pre-textual” ethnography. While seeking possibilities for its application, I analyse potential limitations of the latter. I use my own research experiences form Zdrój and Podstawowa Opieka Zdrowotna (POZ, Basic Healthcare). I consider these projects as embedded in two contrasting methodological traditions spanned between post-semiotic analyses and phenomenologically influenced anthropology. I argue, that t…
