Abstraction as a Source of Inventive Creativity
The research framework announced in the title reflects a dual structure of this paper – conceptual and methodological. The central argument of the conceptual section is that abstraction constitutes a fundamental form of inventive activity for creators of works of art. Hereto, various types of imaginative transformations of features abstracted from real objects are also presented. The methodological part, as indicated in the subtitle, evaluates va…
Linguistic modality acts in existential semiotics
Against the background of deliberations about the conception of worldhood as developed in existential semiotics on the basis of linguistic modality acts, this paper proposes merging mundane and transcendentalist phenomenology with epistemology as a theory of knowledge, in general, that alludes to pragmatic sources of human knowledge about the world, in particular. From the epistemological perspective, the reality of the human “life-world” is cons…
Uncovering the two conceptions of the linguistic sign in Saussure’s lectures
The principal object of this study is constituted by two epistemologically distinct models of Ferdinand de Saussure’s depictions of the linguistic sign. The first model pertains to a bilateral conception of the sign as an inseparable unity of two sides that evoke each other in the mind of individuals during their speaking and understanding activities. The second model, termed here as ‘unilateral conception’, has been deduced from Saussure’s under…
From signs of language and culture to semioses of life
This paper is an attempt at evaluating the advancement of the conceptual and methodological framework of semiotics across its neighboring disciplines as launched and promoted by Thomas Albert Sebeok on a worldwide scale. Writing in a first-person account, the author describes, firstly, his own road to the semiotic study of linguistics, owing to the acquaintance with editorial outputs as well as with the professional proficiency of this founding f…
Umwelt, Lebenswelt and Dasein seen through the lens of a subjective experience of reality
Depar ting from estimations of existential universes of animals (umwelt) and humans (Lebenswelt and Dasein), this paper observes a number of views on the subjective experience, or modelling systems of reality, developed in the philosophy of nature and culture. The first part examines how the semantic relationships of nonhuman and human organisms with their environments are outlined in phenomenology as a study of individual experience from a subje…

On the biological concept of subjective significance
A logical-philosophical approach to the meaning-carriers or meaning-processes is juxtaposed with the anthropological-biological concepts of subjective significance uniting both for the semiotics of culture and the semiotics of nature. It is assumed that certain objects, which are identifiable in the universe of man and in the world surrounding all living organisms as significant from the perspective of meaning-receivers, meaning-creators and mean…
The development of general linguistics within the history of the language sciences in Poland, 1868-1968
This essay offers an overview of the contribution of Polish linguists to the development of general linguistics covering the period of the late 1860s - late 1960s. It analyzes, within an epistemological perspective, the heritage of academic teachers of the period who developed their own proposals to the theory of language against the scientific legacy which characterized European linguistics of the time. The division into periods of development c…
