  • Hodgson’s vocabularies of Vayu and Bahing

    Open Access•Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•2026

This article examines two mid-19th century vocabularies of Kiranti languages Vayu and Bahing (Eastern Nepal) compiled by Brian Hodgson and which accompany grammar sketches of the same languages. The vocabularies, which are both English-Kiranti, have a parts-of-speech macro-structure, but adopt a combination of different ordering systems with respect to their micro-structures. The article describes the two vocabularies with respect to their struct…

  • Ideophonic patterns in Kiranti languages and beyond

    Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Folia Linguistica•2023

This article looks at descriptions of ideophones in Kiranti (Sino-Tibetan, Eastern Nepal) languages. It will do so by first providing a description of the ideophones of Thulung, for which four distinct ideophone types are identified, on the basis of a 10 h narrative corpus. Next, the results of this analysis will be compared to descriptions of ideophonic lexemes in sources on other Kiranti languages. In order to place these topics within an areal…

  • Elevational deixis in the Kiranti verb

Open Access•Guillaume Jacques, Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman…•2023

This article deals with elevational deixis in Kiranti languages, a feature which is pervasive in these languages in both the verbal and nominal domains. The system of elevation is described in most grammars of these languages as tripartite, following the typologically common system comprising up(wards), same level/across, down(wards) elevations. This work reviews the available data on elevational deixis in the verbal system, and has two main cont…

  • Chains of influence in Himalayan grammars

    Open Access•Barbara F Kelly, Barbara Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2021•References: 49

This paper examines comparability of descriptive grammars across typologically different languages. Focusing on the Nepal Himalayas, which has high language diversity that extends beyond areal, genetic, and historical categorization, the paper examines similarities across grammars and the influences motivating these. It reports on the construction and use of a database comprising materials from 18 descriptive grammars of Tibeto-Burman languages o…

  • Glossing in the Linguistic Survey of India

    Open Access•Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•2021•References: 15

In this article, I explore glossing practices in the period surrounding the publication of the Linguistic Survey of India (LSI), the large-scale survey of languages spoken on the Indian subcontinent at the turn of the 20th century, under the stewardship of George Abraham Grierson (1851-1941). After a brief discussion of the reasons that the LSI constitutes a useful corpus for studying glossing practices, I provide a detailed examination of the gl…

  • Predicate derivations in Thulung

Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Journal of South Asian Languages…•2020

In this article, I describe a subset of complex predicates in Thulung (Kiranti, Nepal) which I call “predicate derivations” (after Post, Mark. 2010. Predicate derivations in the Tani languages: root, suffix, both or neither? In Mark Post & Stephen Morey (eds.), North East Indian linguistics , 175–197. New Delhi: Cambridge University Press India). I argue that these constructions in Thulung are built on grammaticalized elements that can be synchro…

  • Van Breugel Seino. 2019. Atong Texts

    Open Access•Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Histoire Épistémologie Langage•2020

This presentation of 37 glossed, translated and annotated texts is based on field recordings made by van Breugel from 2004 to 2007, while he was a PhD student at LaTrobe University. They are presented here in a distinct volume which completes the trio made up of the previously published dictionary (2009, rev. 2015) and grammar (2014) of the endangered language Atong, which van Breugel is the first linguist to document. Atong is a Tibeto-Burman la…

  • Grammaticalia

  • Reflexive paradigms in Khaling

Guillaume Jacques, Aimée Lahaussois et al.•ARTICLE•Linguistics of the Tibeto-Burman…•2016

Khaling, like other Kiranti languages, has a Reflexive / Middle suffix-si, the main function of which is to reduce the valence of verbs. The present paper describes the complex morphological alternations observed in the reflexive paradigms, and provides a detailed account of the various meanings of the -si derivation in Khaling

  • Nominalization, relativization, genitivization in Thulung Rai

    Open Access•Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Proceedings of the Annual Meeting…•2014

  • The auditory demonstrative in Khaling

Guillaume Jacques, Aimée Lahaussois•ARTICLE•Studies in Language•2014

This paper shows the existence of an auditory demonstrative in Khaling. The use of the demonstrative is illustrated via examples taken from narrative discourse. It is described here within the context of the spatial demonstrative system, in order to demonstrate how it is specifically used to highlight that perception of the referent is attained using the sense of audition, regardless of the visibility of the object in question. Khaling appears to…
