On Dixon’s ‘dangerous idea’
In his book Are some languages better than others? , the leading linguist R.M.W. Dixon put forward what we refer to as ‘Dixon’s dangerous idea’, i.e. the idea that linguistics should evaluate the relative worth of languages and provide some general criteria for deciding whether certain languages can be taken to be better or worse than others. Although it is obviously licit to raise this question, Dixon’s arguments when answering it are inaccurate…

That Was Not 'Lenneberg's Dream
Eric Heinz Lenneberg (1921-1975), a neuroscientist and linguist born in Düsseldorf, published his masterpieceBiological Foundations of Languagein1967. This book, now recognized as a classic in the field, inaugurated the scientific study of the biology of language, and has since its publication exerted an enormous influence. However, some interpretations of this work do not accurately capture the author's biological and linguistic thinking. Here I…

Beyond generative geneticism: Rethinking language acquisition from a developmentalist point of view
What about a (really) minimalist theory of language acquisition
The Minimalist Program introduced a new concept of language and added new content to the innateness position concerning our linguistic capacity. It also redefined the metatheoretical role of the theory of acquisition within generative grammar. This article explores at length all these issues and offers a critical survey of the disconcerting situation dominating today's relationship between syntacticians and acquisitionists
The abandonment of extrinsic rule ordering in generative grammar
Extrinsic rule ordering was a device used within the Standard Theory of Generative Grammar which determined the correct order for transformations to apply. During the 1970s some linguists, led by Andreas Koutsoudas, showed how this device could be eliminated. However, the great importance of their work has never been recognised. Furthermore, it is argued why an accurate account of the abandonment of extrinsic rule ordering matters: it represents …
The Status of Transformations in the Minimalist Program and the Logical Problem of Language Acquisition: An Apparent Disagreement
Article THE STATUS OF TRANSFORMATIONS IN THE MINIMALIST PROGRAM AND THE LOGICAL PROBLEM OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION: AN APPARENT DISAGREEMENT was published on January 1, 1999 in the journal Theoretical Linguistics (volume 25, issue 2-3)
Subject clitics and clitic recycling: Locative sentences in some Iberian Romance languages
The first concern of this article is an analysis of locative sentences in the Iberian Romances. It is argued that both the existential (〈HAVE〉) and the stative (〈BE〉) construction derive from a single abstract verb. Their differences are based in the presence vs. the absence of an incorporation process over an otherwise identical lexical structure. The second topic of the paper is a study of the behavior of pronominal clitics within these sentenc…
