Neanderthal Activity Through Fire During the Middle Pleistocene in Cova Negra (Xàtiva, Spain)
The micro-archaeological study of Neanderthal fires provides exceptional insight into the behavior and activities carried out by these populations. We present the micromorphological results of level VIII of Cova Negra (Xàtiva, Spain), which is attributed, based on its dates, to MIS 7. Large areas of combustion were recorded, featuring important accumulations of ash and rubefied surfaces, with very few charred residues and sparse archaeological ma…
High-resolution insights into protohistoric construction: A micromorphological study of gypsum use in earthen architecture in Gebut (Lleida, Spain)
The technique of soil micromorphology has seen a significant increase in its use over the past few decades. However, this tool is still underutilized in protohistoric sites in the Iberian Peninsula, despite having shown promising results. This work examines the use of gypsum as a construction material in the protohistoric site of Gebut, (Lleida, Spain), through a geoarchaeological study based on micromorphology. The results challenge the belief t…
Water management and raw-earth construction in protohistory: Uses and transformations of reservoir BS-1625 at the site of Vilars d'Arbeca (Lleida, Spain)
Micromorphological characterisation of the infill of negative structures. • Preparing and adapting reservoirs to store rainwater. • Reuse of reservoirs and negative structures to produce raw earth. • Management and reuse of waste to produce raw earth. The Fortress of Vilars d'Arbeca (775–300 cal BC) is a reference site for the transition from the Early Iron Age to the Iberian period in the north-east of the Iberian Peninsula. It’s noteworthy, how…
Geoarchaeological and microstratigraphic view of a Neanderthal settlement at Rambla de Ahíllas in Iberian Range: Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Valencia, Spain)
The Abrigo de la Quebrada is a Middle Palaeolithic rockshelter located in the Rambla de Ahíllas in the Iberian Range (Valencia, Spain). Archaeological work began in 2007 and was completed in 2015, reaching the rockshelter substratum and uncovering a record that spans from MIS 5 to MIS 4/3. The data from the geoarchaeological and micromorphological study of the site allow us to deduce that it was formed by alluvial contributions from the ephemeral…
Cova de les Malladetes (Valencia, Spain): New Insights About the Early Upper Palaeolithic in the Mediterranean Basin of the Iberian Peninsula
New excavations carried out at Cova de les Malladetes confirm and improve previous information on the archaeological sequence of this site. A total of 29 new dates allow to specify the chronology of the Aurignacian (levels XIVA–XII) and Gravettian (levels XI–VII). Furthermore, concerning the results obtained during the 1970 excavation, three new levels were identified: level XIVB, which represents a short temporal human occupation hiatus, and lev…
Pastoral Practices, Bedding and Fodder During the Early Neolithic Through Micromorphology at Cova Colomera (Southeastern Pre-Pyrenees, Iberia)
The microstratigraphic study of the Cova Colomera (Sant Esteve de la Sarga, Lleida, Spain) confirms that there are several discontinuous ovicaprid stabling episodes in the Late Cardial Neolithic sequence ( c . 5250–4780 cal BC). There are episodes with and without combustion traces. From the burnt episodes, it has been possible to identify bedding and fodder due to their good preservation and abundance in the X-32 sector, specifically the level C…
This paper presents the contributions of micromorphology to the study of the hypogeum of Carrer Paris (Cerdanyola del Vallès, Barcelona), dated between 2878 and 2206 cal bc. The hypogeum of Carrer Paris was first used for a collective inhumation during the Late Neolithic. Afterward it was used again during the Bell-Beaker Chalcolithic for three different burial episodes including Bell-Beaker vessels.. The continued use of the sepulcher highlights…
