  • Inner Asian Agropastoralism Within the Mongol Empire

Open Access•Greta Brancaleoni, Svetlana Shnaider et al.•ARTICLE•Geoarchaeology•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 13

Agropastoralism has been a widespread subsistence strategy in Central Asia from prehistory to the present. While significant research has aimed at understanding past agropastoral communities in the region, reconstructing a generalized economic model remains challenging due to the complex topographic and ecological conditions, as well as its social and political variability. It is likely that subsistence strategies were flexible and adapted to loc…

  • Geoarchaeological Research at the Paleolithic Sites of Northern Tien Shan in Kyrgyzstan in 2024

    Open Access•R Kurbanov, A А Anoikin et al.•ARTICLE•Problems of Archaeology…•2024

In the 1990s, the Russian-Kyrgyz archaeological expedition discovered and studied the open-air sites of Tosor on the southern shore of Lake Issyk-Kul and Yutash-sai in the Alai Range. The industries of these sites were tentatively attributed to the Middle and Upper Paleolithic. However, the absence of organic materials in the layers did not make it possible to obtain absolute chronological definitions for these complexes. Although the situation w…

  • Опыт определения копромаркеров в отложениях археологических памятников (по материалам стоянки Сельунгур, Южный Кыргызстан)

    Open Access•Mikhail V Shashkov, Snezhana V Zhilich et al.•ARTICLE•ORIENTAL STUDIES•2023

Introduction. The article discusses the results of a study of ash layers from Holocene deposits at the Selungur (Surungur) Cave. Goals. So, the work attempts a practical evaluation of a method of identifying coprostanols in archaeological sediments. The investigation of Holocene deposits of the site was carried out in 2018 and 2021 field seasons. The study identifies a total of 7 Holocene layers that represent the typical 'fumier' facies of cave …

  • Study of Macrocharcoal Remains from Charcoal Interlayers at the Surungur Archaeological Site Depositions (Fergana Valley, Southern Kyrgyzstan)

    Open Access•Snezhana V Zhilich, Temirlan Chargynov et al.•ARTICLE•Teoriya i praktika arkheologicheski…•2022

The paper researches the adaptation of ancient people to climate change and their influence on the surrounding landscapes on the example of the Surungur archaeological site (Southern Kyrgyzstan). The charcoal interlayers from Surungur depositions (excavations of 2021) were studied by the method of macrocharcoal analysis. Charcoals of different types were found in the samples: wood, grass, charred bones and amorphous charcoals. Amorphous coals are…

  • Multidisciplinary Study of Burnt Deposits at Surungur, Fergana Valley, Southern Kyrgyzstan

    Open Access•I E Dedov, Ekaterina P Kulakova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 18

Burnt deposits are an important source of information on ancient lifestyles, providing the possibility of reconstructing the size, intensity of use, and functions of fi replaces at prehistoric settlements, and to assess fuel sources. We outline the results of a multidisciplinary study of fi replaces and their contexts at Surungur—a stratifi ed site in the Fergana Valley, in southern Kyrgyzstan. Sixteen samples from ash lenses and intermediate dep…

  • A Multidisciplinary Study of Burnt Deposits at Surungur, Fergana Valley, Southern Kyrgyzstan

    I E Dedov, Ekaterina P Kulakova et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2021

  • Surungur - New Early Holocene Archaeological Site in Fergana Valley

Svetlana Shnaider, Snezhana Zhylich et al.•ARTICLE•Stratum plus Archaeology and…•2021•Cited by: 1

The article presents the first results of a comprehensive study of the new archaeological site Surungur in the Fergana Valley. Interdisciplinary research was conducted in 2018-2019 by an international Russian-Kyrgyz expedition. The direct archeological work at the site was preceded by geophysical surveys, which helped to identify the most promising areas for future research. The archaeological excavations made it possible to identify a series of …

  • Peculiarities of Using 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography in Caves

    В В Оленченко, L V Tsibizov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020

  • Peculiarities of Using 2D Electrical Resistivity Tomography in Caves

    Open Access•В В Оленченко, R O Trapezov et al.•ARTICLE•Archaeology Ethnology and…•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 4

The efficiency of archaeological studies inside caves could be greatly enhanced by geophysical methods because of their potential for examining deposit structure and features. Application of those methods in caves entails a number of problems caused by limited space for measurements and the complexity of the surrounding medium s structure as compared to above-ground measurements. In 2017, Selungur Cave in the Fergana Valley, Kyrgyzstan, was exami…

  • The formation of human populations in South and Central Asia

Open Access•Vagheesh M Narasimhan, Nick Patterson et al.•ARTICLE•Science•2019

Ancient human movements through Asia Ancient DNA has allowed us to begin tracing the history of human movements across the globe. Narasimhan et al. identify a complex pattern of human migrations and admixture events in South and Central Asia by performing genetic analysis of more than 500 people who lived over the past 8000 years (see the Perspective by Schaefer and Shapiro). They establish key phases in the population prehistory of Eurasia, incl…

  • The Experience of the Interdisciplinary Field School to Study the Sites of the Stone Age

Open Access•Sophie Schneider, Alisher Kyzy et al.•ARTICLE•Teoriya i praktika arkheologicheski…•2019

In the field season of 2019 in the territory of southern Kyrgyzstan, an interdisciplinary field school for the study of the Stone Age site was organized on the basis of the international Central Asian Paleolithic detachment, supported by the Scientific and Educational Center “New Archaeology” (Humanitarian Institute, Novosibirsk State University). The work of the school took place in the framework of three main blocks – lectures, excavation pract…
