  • The (Im)possibility of Separating Rabbinic Texts into Literary Genres: Form Analysis and Text Linguistics

    Rivka Ulmer•ARTICLE•Jewish Studies Quarterly•2025

This paper analyzes rabbinic homiletic texts from the perspective of form analysis in combination with text-linguistic theories. My study indicates that, from the perspective of functional considerations, it is not meaningful to lift small literary forms from a coherent text that depends on a co-text to create meaning. Additionally, the concepts of genre and parable need to be abandoned and replaced by texttype and mashal. The form-analytical des…

  • Apocalypticism in the Homiletic Text of Pesiqta Rabbati: Catastrophic Events at the End of Time

Rivka Ulmer•ARTICLE•Journal for the Study of Judaism•2019

The rabbinic homiletic work Pesiqta Rabbati contains several apocalyptic topoi in its homilies that culminate in descriptions of divine intervention in history, total destruction followed by the messianic age at the end-of-time, and justice at the final judgment. Nevertheless, Pesiqta Rabbati does not present itself as an apocalypse, nor does it belong to the text-type “apocalypse.” It contains midrashic apocalypticism by interpreting scriptural …

In Jewish texts other than Pesiq. Rab. , the Ephraimite Messiah was consistently portrayed as a militant figure, a warrior. The objective of this ar…

  • The Egyptian Gods in Midrashic Texts

    Open Access•Rivka Ulmer•ARTICLE•Harvard Theological Review•2010

The engagement with Egypt and the Egyptian gods that transpired in the Hebrew Bible continued into the texts produced by rabbinic Judaism. Rabbinic texts of late antiquity and the early medieval period frequently presented images of Egypt and its religion. One of the critical objectives of these portrayals of Egypt was to set boundaries of Jewish identity by presenting rabbinic Judaism in opposition to Egyptian culture. The Egyptian cultural icon…
