This paper's design is twofold. 1) Contribute to the analysis of Demotic grammar's most significant and also most characteristically Demotic problem, involving a set of orthographically and morphologically similar or identical and mostly vocalic grammatical morphemes known since Polotsky as converters or conjugation bases and corresponding in Coptic typically to Alphas or Epsilons with an occasional Ro. 2) Produce additional evidence for what the…
The Calendars and the Year-counts of Ancient Egypt
The article provides an overview of the two main topics of the study of time-reckoning: calendars and year-counts. Calendars are structures that regulate how days add up to months and months add up to a year. Year-counts are methods of counting the years themselves. A third topic, the time of the day, plays only a minimal role in ancient Egyptian chronology. Egyptian calendar history consists of four major epochs. From about the fourteenth centur…

Calendar, ancient Near East
All attested ancient Near Eastern calendars are lunar. Lost calendars and any transmitted only orally presumably were too.
Zu Lehr- und Lernbarkeit des ägyptischen Verbs. Wie viele typisch mittelägyptische sḏm.f-Formen gibt es eigentlich? Neun!
Much confusion reigns in our understanding of the Old and Middle Egyptian verb. What should Egyptology beginners make of it all? The main cause of the confusion is that hieroglyphic writing does not represent the verbal system fully. The sḏm.f-formation is affected the most. Much clarity could be added to the discussion if as many specialists as possible devoted to the research of the Egyptian verbal system committed themselves to a specific numb…

New Date for the Second Persian Conquest, End of Pharaonic and Manethonian Egypt
Artaxerxes III’s conquest of Egypt signified the end of Egypt of the Pharaohs. For more than half a century now, the event has been dated to either 343 B.C.E. or 342 B.C.E. Detailed calibrations focus on the winter of 343/42 B.C.E., especially early 342 B.C.E. Yet, there is no evidence whatsoever for this date. The presumed evidence has escaped scrutiny in Egyptology because it involves subtle reasoning about the supposed purport of Classical Gre…
From Twice Helix to Double Helix
The design of this paper is to consolidate a comprehensive model pertaining to the evolution of Egyptian calendars over three millennia of Pharaonic history, as an extension of this writer's earlier work on calendars. This model is a variation on the model advanced by Ludwig Borchardt and Richard Parker. While hardly immune from criticism, the Borchardt-Parker model has been prevalent in the second half of the twentieth century. According to this…
Function and Significance of the Ebers Calendar's Lone Feast-Hieroglyph (Gardiner Sign-List W3)
The Ebers calendar exhibits one sole instance of. This hieroglyph accompanies the name wp rnpt, presumably as a determinative, whereas the 11 other names in the same column conspicuously lack it. It is proposed that marks wp rnpt as the name of a lunar day whereas the 11 other names are the names of lunar months. This contrast between day and month is placed in the context of a comprehensive analysis of the entire Ebers calendar and of the origin…

Esna's Triple New Year
The sole structure still standing of temple domain dedicated to god Khnum at Esna or Latopolis, a town located about 50 km south of Thebes on west bank of Nile, is a well preserved Roman-period hypostyle hall. Its various parts date roughly to two centuries lasting from about mid-first century C.E. to about mid-third century C.E. Its back wall is preserved facade of a Ptolemaic temple of which little else now remains. Perhaps most informative tex…

The Date of Death of Jesus of Nazareth
No single matter of chronology has been examined so thoroughly as the date of death of Jesus of Nazareth. It is chronology's premier topic. The aim of this paper is not to propose a new date. All agree that only a handful of days in the late 20s and early 30s of the first century C.E. qualify. These dates have all been defended at one time or another. Rather, the paper is about a remarkable change of direction in past research on the topic. By th…

A New Coptic Grammar
Bentley Layton's recent book is a full-scale reference grammar of the Coptic language in its most diversely preserved and most studied dialect, Sahidic. In its Coptic stage, Egyptian is no longer written with hieroglyphic signs, but rather with Greek letters supplemented by a small number of characters derived from hieroglyphic writing and used in Sahidic mainly to denote the consonant sounds here transcribed as s (like sh in shoe), f, h, c (orig…

Sothic Chronology and the Old Kingdom
Chronology is the backbone of any serious engagement with the past. The rest is history. In 1899, on the eve of the twentieth century C.E., Middle Kingdom chronology was re-established on a Sothic base (Borchardt 1899: 99-103). By 1999, a century later, on the eve of the third millennium c.e., evidence had become available that made principles of Sothic chronology also relevant to dating the Old Kingdom and therefore the third millennium b.c.e. i…

On the Consistency of the Wandering Year as Backbone of Egyptian Chronology
In the house of history studying chronology is like puttering about the basement working on the plumbing or furnace instead of joining the conversation in the dining room. But it is occasionally useful to check the basic apparatus. The present paper deals with the fundamental axiom of Egyptian chronology of the period before about 700 b.c.e. This axiom, with which the outline of Old, Middle, and New Kingdom chronology stands or falls, holds that,…

The Date of Piye's Egyptian Campaign and the Chronology of the Twenty-Fifth Dynasty
This paper examines the chronology of the Nubian kings Piye, Shabaka, and Shabataka. The status of 712 BC as an ‘anchor date’ for the period is challenged and a ‘minimal chronology’, based on the highest known regnal dates of these kings, is presented, yielding the dates 728–706 BC for the reign of Piye, 706–692 BC for that of Shabaka, and 692–690 BC for that of Shabataka. It is suggested that the absence of evidence positively refuting the minim…
For the Sake of ogw[coptic small letter shei], 'Love'
For the Sake of ∘γωϣ, ‘Love’
A historical explanation is offered for the exceptional behaviour of the Coptic verb Oγωω ‘love, wish’ in relation to the Stern-Jernstedt Rule. It is argued that, at the time when the Stern-Jernstedt Rule took effect, in early Demotic, there were two constructions wḫȝ n ‘seek’ and wḫȝ ‘wish’ and that the verb wḫȝ in the latter meaning was barred from the indirect connection of the direct object because wḫȝ n meant ‘seek’ in all its conjugations

Evidence for Accession Dating under the Achaemenids
THIS PAPER IS CONCERNED WITH the way or ways in which Persian kings counted their regnal years.1 Three regnal dating methods, attested in Babylonia and Egypt, need to be considered. First, in the postdating system, years can be counted from one New Year's Day to the next, with Year 1 beginning on the first New Year's Day after the accession. The time from accession to the first New Year's Day is the accession year. This system was standard in Bab…
