Ritual, Media, and Conflict
By discussing key definitions and functions of ritual, this chapter-length introduction frames the case studies that follow it. The chapter first chronicles the complex process of trying to work as an international team to refine research questions and coauthor chapters. Then, the chapter lays out the problems involved in studying ritual's relation to media. Finally, it sketches the issues that arise in studying ritual's relation to conflict.

The chapter contemplates the shooting of rites with still and video cameras, a strange but widespread cultural activity that can either disrupt, extend, or validate these rites. It identifies the emerging issues concerning the visual documentation of ritual for purposes of conducting field research, making classroom and conference presentations, supplementing written texts, and consulting with non-academic organizations.
