  • Menarcheal age and subsequent patterns of family formation

    Ann P Riley, M Weinstein et al.•ARTICLE•Biodemography and Social Biology•2001•References: 13

We examine whether age at menarche affects age at first marriage or first birth using two samples of U.S. women. Data are drawn from the Tremin Trust, a longitudinal study of menstrual cycles that recruited white women who were students at the University of Minnesota and from a survey of a nationally representative sample of white women born between 1900 and 1910. Regression models with cubic splines were used to analyze the relationship between …

  • Modeling Seasonality in Fecundability, Conceptions, and Births

    Open Access•David Lam, David A Lam et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1994•Cited by: 16•References: 23

This paper develops a model of seasonal fluctuations in fecundability, conceptions, and births. We begin with a model of individual fecundability that combines behavioral and biological components, with particular attention to the roles of coital frequency, sperm concentration, fetal loss, and contraception. The individual-level model is then expanded into a model of seasonal fluctuations in births at the population level, which accounts explicit…

  • Program- and Method-Related Determinants of First DMPA Use Duration in Rural Bangladesh

Ann P Riley, M Kathryn Stewart et al.•ARTICLE•Studies in Family Planning•1994•Cited by: 1

This article examines the determinants of first-time use durations of the injectable contraceptive Depo Medroxy Progesterone Acetate (DMPA) for rural Bangladeshi women. The method's side effects were defined by 200 first-time users in Matlab district during lengthy, open-ended interviews. Women with many children used the method longer than did women of low parity. Those who experienced side effects had shorter use durations than those who did no…

  • Dynamic and static measures of growth among pre‐ and postmenarcheal females in rural Bangladesh

    Open Access•Ann P Riley•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•1990

Height and weight for age and height and weight velocity are examined in a sample of Bangladeshi adolescents aged 10–20 years with an average age at menarche of 15.8 years. Interpopulation differences between pre‐ and postmenarcheal girls are assessed and age patterns are compared to standards of U.S. and British adolescents. Bangladeshi adolescents are shorter and lighter for their age and lighter for their height than are U.S. adolescents. The …

  • Age at menarche and postmenarcheal growth in rural Bangladeshi females

    Open Access•Ann P Riley, Sandra L Huffman et al.•ARTICLE•Annals of Human Biology•1989

This study examines the role of chronological age and time since menarche (TSM) as determinants of postmenarcheal growth in height and weight in a chronically malnourished population of rural Bangladeshi females aged 10-20 years. Height and weight measurements were collected for 12 months from 290 postmenarcheal girls, with known times since menarche, and on 118 girls who reached menarche during the one year follow-up. Two stage regression analys…
