Princes, Dervishes and Dragons
Toward the end of the nineteenth century much of Iran’s architectural heritage gave way to urban development. Among the casualties were the seventeenth-century Safavid palaces of Isfahan. Local dealers salvaged a series of astonishingly beautiful pictorial arch-shaped panels composed of cuerda seca tiles from one of these. Beginning in 1911 whole panels and many single tiles were sold through Hagop Kevorkian. The authors have assembled (digitally…
Persian Pottery in the First Global Age
Persian Pottery in the First Global Age: the Sixteenth and Seventeeth Centuries studies the ceramic industry of Iran in the Safavid period (1501-1732) and the impact which the influx of Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, heightened by the activities of the English and Dutch East Indies Companies after c. 1700, had on local production. The multidisciplinary approach of the authors (Lisa Golombek, Robert B. Mason, Patricia Proctor, Eileen Reilly) le…
The So-Called “Turabeg Khanom” Mausoleum in Kunya Urgench
From Timur To Tivoli
At a symposium focusing on the gardens of the early modern Muslim empires, organized in 1994 at MIT by Attilio Petruciolli, several papers dealt with contemporary European gardens. Speaking about the Italian garden and cultural identity, the garden historian Claudia Lazzaro noted that a particular style of garden came to be designated as il giardino all?italiana , an expression first used in the eighteenth century to distinguish the English garde…

Founded by Oleg Grabar in 1983, Muqarnas is the first academic journal devoted to art, architectural history, archaeology, as well as all aspects of Islamic visual and material cultures, historical and contemporary. Early Illustrated Manuscripts of Kashifi's Akhlāq-i Muḥsinī
Of the Many Recorded Manuscripts of Husayn Vaciz-i Kashifi's Treatise on ethics, Akhlāq-i Muḥinī, only six were planned to have illustrations to the text. The manuscript bearing what is ostensibly the earliest date (900/1494-95), was acquired by the Royal Ontario Museum in 1997. It opens with a shamsah , inscribed with a dedication to the Timurid prince Abu’l-Muhsin, and containing the date 900 in numerals (fig. 1). On the last folio, a quatrain …

The nineteen papers collected in this volume were delivered at a symposium held in Toronto, November 1989 in order to discuss the art and culture of Timurid times. The papers cover the last decades of the fourteenth century and the whole of the fifteenth, in an area of western Asia extending roughly from the Euphrates to the Hindu Kush and to the Altai. Among the subjects covered were: 'Discourses of an Imaginary Arts Council in Fifteenth-Century…
The Timurid Architecture of Iran and Turan
An upsurge of interest in Islamic art and architecture creates the ideal climate for publication of this long-awaited comprehensive picture of the entire range of building activity sponsored by the Timurids during the fifteenth century, including the monumental, color-clad mosques, shrines, and mausoleums. The term here refers not only to the empire established by Timur around 1370, but also to that of his successors and their rivals who shared i…

The Resilience of the Friday Mosque
In the course of the fifteenth century metropolitan centers in the Timurid and Turkmen realms underwent astonishing growth. The old urban cores were ringed by new suburbs. Water facilities expanded to accommodate the vast garden estates that had been growing up in these previously open spaces. Suburbs with their own quarter infrastructures rapidly became integral parts of the cities as population pressure pushed out from the old cores. Despite th…

Urban Patterns in Pre-Safavid Isfahan
The splendour of Safavid Isfahan is no doubt proverbial. The landmarks that come to mind--the great Maydān-i Shāh with its stage perpetually set, the elegant Chahār Bāgh avenue, the graceful bridges slung across the Zayandah Rud--would make it appear as though the topography of Isfahan today, except for the old Jāmi c , is a Safavid one. It is hard to believe, however, that the ages have not left a deeper mark, that the patterns of life generated…
