  • Examining the Production and Distribution of Shivwits Ware Pottery in the American Southwest

    Open Access•K G Harry, T J Ferguson et al.•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•2013•Cited by: 6•References: 6

Compositional analyses were undertaken to evaluate the hypothesis that Shivwits Ware pottery found in southern Nevada was not produced in that area but, instead, manufactured on the Shivwits Plateau. The evidence supports this hypothesis and indicates that large quantities of Shivwits Ware jars moved through a distribution system linking the upland areas of the western Arizona Strip with the lowlands of southeastern Nevada. This long-distance mov…

  • The Virgin Anasazi, far western Puebloans

  • Social Complexity Among the Lowland Virgin Anasazi

    Margaret M Lyneis•ARTICLE•KIVA•1992•Cited by: 3•References: 5

Burials from the site of Main Ridge provide an important test of recent assertions that Anasazi societies in southern Nevada were chiefdoms. Six of forty-five burials included shell or turquoise ornaments, and the quantity of associations ranged from one to twenty-one items. Despite this variability, the burial population does not show the strong associations among burial location, kinds of associations and quantities of associations to be expect…

  • A Spatial Analysis of Anasazi Architecture, A.D. 950–1150, Moapa Valley, Nevada

    Margaret M Lyneis•ARTICLE•KIVA•1986

Until recently, there has been no temporal sequence within the Lost City phase, the expression of Pueblo I and II in the lowland Virgin Branch area. Recently isolated trends in the local ceramic sequence permit identification of sites dating to A.D. 950–1100, the later part of the Lost City phase. This ceramic chronology allows study of architecture by time period. During the Lost City phase, household units occupy contiguous habitation and stora…

  • Preservation

    Open Access•Thomas F King, Margaret M Lyneis•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1978•Cited by: 13•References: 9

Social, historic, ethnohistoric, and archaeological values increasingly are considered in federal decision making affecting land use and modification. In situ preservation of significant archaeological properties is now often attainable through sensitive project planning. When destruction is unavoidable, funds are more often available for sound programs of data recovery than was the case in the past. The laws and policies which govern historic pr…
