Behrooz Ghamari-Tabrizi. Foucault in Iran
French intellectuals often tend to be more politicized than their academic counterparts elsewhere in northern Europe; and some might have conceived of the Iranian Revolution of 1978–1979 as another outburst of political energy similar to that which they had witnessed and, perhaps, participated in themselves in France in May 1968. A decade later and far away, different voices, both secular and religious, intellectuals, students, and trade unionist…
Authorial Voices and the Sense of an Ending in Persian Diaries
This essay examines certain common themes as well as conflicting voices in two extensive sets of Persian diaries, written almost a century apart, by Mohammad-Hasan Khān Eʿtemād al-Saltaneh (1843‒96), a long-time courtier and confidant of Nāser al-Din Shah Qajar (r. 1848‒86) and Asadollāh ʿAlam (1919‒78) a close associate and court minister of Mohammad-Reza Shah Pahlavi (r. 1941‒79). On the whole these diaries provide significant amounts of inform…

New Conservative Politics and Electoral Behavior in Iran
This chapter argues that the turbulent decade leading up to the 2005 elections—marked by contentious issues over the direction of Iran's domestic and foreign policies—created an opportunity for the traditional clerical establishment to engage in intense efforts that successfully consolidated conservative power. Indeed, interference in the February 2004 parliamentary elections by the Guardian Council helped to put back in place a conservative parl…

Democracy in Iran
Recently Iran has once again been in the headlines. Reputed to be developing nuclear weapons, the future of Iraq's next-door neighbor is a matter of grave concern both for the stability of the region and for the safety of the global community. President George W. Bush labeled it part of the “Axis of Evil,” and has railed against the country's authoritarian leadership. Yet as Bush trumpets the spread of democracy throughout the Middle East, few no…

The conservative consolidation in Iran
Over the past eight years, Iran's conservative leadership has effectively tightened its hold on power, thwarting aftempts at political reform. It has centralised decision-making, strengthened the Revolutionary Guard, invested in new strategic weapons, built ties of patronage and effectively used economic levers to assert control. The conservatives' consolidation of power now constitutes the framework of Iran's power politics, which will in turn d…
