  • Realtà politiche e istituzionali nelle città fenicio-puniche in Sicilia: Quali dati

    Open Access•Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2020

Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo, Brian R Doak et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of the Phoenician…•2019

Phoenician is the conventional name (from Greek) of a language belonging to the Canaanite group of the Semitic languages, spoken in a group of cities of the Lebanese coast and by inhabitants of their settlements abroad, established in the western Mediterranean since about the early eighth century bce . The western language, from about the sixth century bce , is usually called Punic, with a Late Punic phase. The Phoenician language is written from…

Open Access•Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo, Arturo Zara•ARTICLE•Antiquités africaines•2018

  • Tell Afis in the Iron Age: The Aramaic Inscriptions

    Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo•ARTICLE•Near Eastern Archaeology•2014•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Three fragmentary inscriptions are to be added to the well-known Aramaic inscription of King Zakkur of Hamath and Luʿash (around 790–80 B.C.E.) found at Tell Afis in 1903 by Henri Pognon. They confirm that Afis was Hatarikka/Hazrak, besieged by a coalition of sixteen rulers, and led by Barhadad, king of Damascus. The first fragmentary inscription mentions Hazael, quite probably a predecessor of Barhadad. The second inscription, on the handle of a…

  • Language and Linguistic Contact in Ancient Sicily

Open Access•Maria Giulia Amadasi Guzzo, Paolo Poccetti et al.•BOOK•Language and Linguistic Contact…•2012

Within the field of ancient bilingualism, Sicily represents a unique terrain for analysis as a result of its incredibly rich linguistic history, in which 'colonial' languages belonging to branches as diverse as Italic (Oscan and Latin), Greek and Semitic (Phoenician) interacted with the languages of the natives (the elusive Sicel, Sicanian and Elymian). The result of this ancient melting-pot was a culture characterised by 'postcolonial' features …
