Elements of Ancient Jewish Nationalism
Contrary to the widespread view that nationalism is a modern phenomenon, Goodblatt argues that it can be found in the ancient world. He argues that concepts of nationalism compatible with contemporary social scientific theories can be documented in the ancient sources from the Mediterranean Rim by the middle of the last millennium BCE. In particular, the collective identity asserted by the Jews in antiquity fits contemporary definitions of nation…
Patriarchs, Romans and (Modern) Scholars

From Judeans To Israel
Josephus on Parthian Babylonia (Antiquities XVIII, 310-379)
Book XVIII of Josephus' Jewish Antiquities concludes with an account of two incidents in the history of the Jews in Babylonia during the first century C.E. The first incident is the rise to power of two Jewish brothers from Nehardea who eventually rule (part of) Babylonia with the consent of the Parthian king. The second incident is a massacre of the Jews in Seleucia on the Tigris. The first part of the article attempts to identify the rival fact…

The Poll Tax in Sasanian Babylonia the Talmudic Evidence
The BT evidence on the poll tax in Babylonia dates on the whole to the fourth century. It therefore provides evidence for a period in which we lack detailed information on Sasanian taxation. The evidence consisted of nineteen pericopae comprising legal discussions, anecdotes, and Biblical exegesis. The details on the tax were generally mentioned only in passing. In several cases, we could not be sure of the precise meaning or implication of the p…
