Punic my c ms and Greek Μαιουμα(ς): A re-examination
My goal in this study is to persuade the reader that the word my c ms is a compound noun with the elements / may / + / yu c mas /. I will endorse the analysis argued by Good that the Punic compound can be explained by reference to the Greek word Μαιουμα(ς), the name of a spring festival. To the cogent objections of critics of the seemingly odd compound implied by this analysis, I offer agreement, but also the further observation that linguistic t…

Zu Ovids Lebzeiten verstand man unter einem »Buch« (lat. liber/volumen) eine Papyrusrolle (Birt 1882; Bülow-Jacobsen 2009; Johnson 2009; Winsbury 2009). Die Rollen wurden aus Ägypten importiert, wo die Papyrusstaude beheimatet war. Über die Herstellung haben wir nur eine ungenaue Beschreibung von Plinius dem Älteren (Plin. nat. 13, 74–82), aus der jedoch die Grundprinzipien erkennbar sind.

Book 3 of Cicero’s de finibus is generally regarded as an accurate description of Stoic ethics. This study shows that Cicero did not present Stoic orthodoxy but combined it with contemporary peripatetic theory. This has implications for our understanding of Stoa and Peripatos and offers new insights into Cicero’s methods and the philosophical discourse of the 1st century BC
