  • Change in Loneliness Experienced by Older Men and Women Living Alone and With Others at the Onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic

    Open Access•Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Allison R Heid et al.•ARTICLE•Research on Aging•2022

Building on theory suggesting that loneliness is distinct from living arrangements, social isolation, and perceived social support, we examined change in loneliness for older people at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Analyzing 14-years of data with multilevel mixed-effects models, we found higher levels of loneliness among people living alone, people more socially isolated, and people with less perceived support. Gender affected changes in lo…

  • The Prospective Association of Personality Traits and Successful Aging

Open Access•Allison R Heid, Rachel Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The International Journal of…•2022

We used data ( N = 928) from ORANJ BOWL, a six-wave panel of adults (aged 50–74 at baseline) to address the association between personality and successful aging at two points in time, 8 years apart. Regressions examined the associations between Wave 2 neuroticism, extraversion, openness, agreeableness, and conscientiousness and Wave 3 subjective success, functional ability, pain, and chronic conditions. Models tested personality traits independen…

  • Impact of Upper and Lower Body Functional Ability on Affect in Older Couples

    Open Access•Allison R Heid, Maureen Wilson-Genderson et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Aging and Health•2021•References: 8

Objective: We explore how upper and lower body functional ability of older adults and their partners relate to affect in later life. Methods: Data regarding own and partner's upper and lower body functional abilities were reported by 1767 married/partnered persons aged 57-83. Using multilevel modeling to account for nesting within couples, we examined the impact of a respondent's own functional abilities, their perception of their partner's abili…

  • Effects of peri-traumatic stress experienced during Hurricane Sandy on functional limitation trajectories for older men and women

    Open Access•Rachel Pruchno, Maureen Wilson-Genderson et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2021•Cited by: 1•References: 78

  • Trajectories of Depressive Symptoms Experienced by Older People: Effects of Time, Hurricane Sandy, and the Great Recession

    Open Access•Rachel Pruchno, Maureen Wilson-Genderson et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2020•References: 3

Depressive symptoms increased as a function of the Great Recession, but exposure to Hurricane Sandy was not associated with subsequent increases in depressive symptoms for any of the 4 groups. People who consistently experienced high levels of depressive symptoms over time reported the highest levels of peri-traumatic stress during Hurricane Sandy. Findings highlight the importance of accounting for historical trends when studying the effects of …

  • Relationship tensions and mood: Adult children's daily experience of aging parents' stubbornness

    Open Access•Allison R Heid, K Kim et al.•ARTICLE•Personal Relationships•2018•References: 26

This study examined middle‐aged individuals' reports of parents' behaviors commonly attributed to stubbornness. Middle‐aged adults ( N = 192) completed a 7‐day diary reporting their mood and how often they felt their parents ( N = 254) engaged in behaviors often described as “stubbornness” (insistent or risky). Thirty‐one percent of middle‐aged children reported insistent behaviors, and 17% reported risky behaviors by their parent(s). Daily repor…

  • Long-term effects of disaster on depressive symptoms: Type of exposure matters

    Open Access•Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Allison R Heid et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science & Medicine•2018•Cited by: 12•References: 49

  • Successful Aging, Social Support, and Ownership of a Companion Animal

Rachel Pruchno, Allison R Heid et al.•ARTICLE•Anthrozoös•2018•Cited by: 6•References: 65

Studies consistently find that higher levels of social support improve the psychological and physiological health of older people, but findings from empirical research are mixed regarding the presence of a "pet effect"— the idea that living with an animal can improve human health, psychological wellbeing, and longevity. We examined the assocations among social support, dog and cat ownership, and successful aging in a panel of 5,688 people between…

  • Modeling Successful Aging Over Time in the Context of a Disaster

    Maureen Wilson-Genderson, Rachel Pruchno et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2016•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Findings have important implications for expanding our conceptualization of SA, clarifying the measures used to understand SA, and the importance of accounting for the effects of disasters on SA

  • My Parent is so Stubborn!”—Perceptions of Aging Parents’ Persistence, Insistence, and Resistance

    Allison R Heid, Steven H Zarit et al.•ARTICLE•The Journals of Gerontology…•2015•Cited by: 5•References: 4

This novel exploration demonstrated that individual and relationship-based factors are linked to the perceived expression of stubbornness by parents and that there is discordance in perceptions within families. Findings suggest a need for intervention to increase understanding within families
