The Iron Age royal citadel and fortifications of Samʾal (modern Zincirli Höyük) were excavated from 1888 to 1902, yielding an impressive assortment of monumental architecture, Neo-Hittite sculpture, and royal inscriptions. New excavations by the University of Chicago were initiated in 2006 to explore the large lower town.
