  • The Dataset for Tracing Invisible Hearths and Daily Routines through Carbonized Plant Remains and Geochemical Signals in an Early Iron Age Smithy at Pungrt Hillfort, Slovenia

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Tjaša Tolar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2026

The dataset presented in this paper comprises results from archaeobotanical and geoarchaeological analyses. It was compiled primarily to reconstruct the location of the archaeologically invisible forge hearth within a late 6th- and early 5th-century BC smithy in Building 24 at Pungrt Hillfort, central Slovenia. The analysed sediment samples were systematically collected in a 50×50 cm grid during the excavation of the building. Archaeobotanical re…

  • PXRF spectrometry in the geoarchaeological analysis of archaeological deposits

Open Access•Agni Prijatelj, Nejc Golob et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2026

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry is widely employed in the geoarchaeological analysis of archaeological deposits. However, the preparation methods and laboratory protocols used remain diverse, with established standards frequently disregarded. In this study, we examine the effects of grinding on the precision of mean analyte concentrations and evaluate the suitability of different factory calibrations and their associated measureme…

  • Podgorica

    Open Access•Petra Vojaković•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2025

The article presents the results of the archaeological investigations conducted at Podgorica. They revealed a settlement considered part of the Podgorica-Dragomelj ‘twin settlement’ that was located at a former streambed and extended across more than 2 ha. The clustered buildings in its centre and the metallurgical-casting activities moved to the periphery indicate a deliberate organisation of the living and work spaces of its inhabitants. The ar…

  • From macro to micro approaches in settlement archaeology

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Agni Prijatelj et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2025

In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary and multiscalar study of an Early Iron Age smithy uncovered at the Pungrt hillfort in Central Slovenia. By examining and comparing the stratigraphic and artefactual evidence preserved at both macro- and micro-scales this study highlights the importance of integrated micromorphological and micro-refuse analyses in settlement contexts. Our integrated approach allowed us to identify the blacksmith’s wor…

  • Proto-urban hillfort at 10 microns

Open Access•Agni Prijatelj, Luka Gruškovnjak et al.•ARTICLE•Antiquity•2024•Cited by: 1

Geoarchaeological analysis of settlement stratigraphy is key to understanding continuity and change in economic, social and cultural spaces within complex (proto-)urban sites. Here, preliminary micromorphological and micro-refuse data from the Pungrt hillfort demonstrate the potential of a fine-scaled geoarchaeology-based approach for understanding the structuring and reuse of space, not just within settlements but within individual households, t…

  • Early Iron Age urbanism in the south-eastern Alpine region

Open Access•Petra Vojaković, Luka Gruškovnjak et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2024•Cited by: 1

Largescale excavation at the Iron Age and Roman period Pungrt hillfort (8th century BC to 2nd century AD) has revealed a distinctly urban character of the settlement in its best-preserved Late Hallstatt phase from the 6th to 4th centuries BC. This study provides an important contribution to the understanding of the settlement's internal organization and its socioeconomic development. By examining the previously unaddressed phenomena of settlement…

Prvič so bile v Ljubljani izpričane manjše gomile s prodnatim jedrom, zemljenim plaščem in zunanjim obodnim jarkom iz zgodnje železne dobe. Po…

  • Prazgodovinska Ljubljana

Analize lončenine in radiokarbonskih datacij so nakazale dve fazi poselitve, prvo v 6. st. in v prvi polovici 7., drugo med sredino 10. in sredino 12. st. Tri pridobljene radiokarbonske datacije nakazujejo naselitev Slovanov v dolino krke v času med letoma 585 in 660, verjetno povezano z odselitvijo langobardov v Italijo leta 568 in prihodom Avarov v Pan…

  • Understanding social relations through settlement vs cemetery records. Late Bronze Age social (in)equalities in the case of Ljubljana (Slovenia)

    Open Access•Brina Škvor Jernejčič, Petra Vojaković•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2020

  • Srečanja in vplivi v raziskovanju bronaste in železne dobe na Slovenskem

Matija Črešnar, Manca Vinazza et al.•BOOK•Srečanja in vplivi v raziskovanju…•2018
