Brinjeva gora above Zreče is a hilltop settlement with remains dating primarily to the Late Bronze Age and the Roman period. This article presents the results of an archaeozoological study of prehistoric animal remains (N = 5500; NISP = 1999), providing detailed insight into contemporary livestock farming practices. The most economically important species were cattle and sheep, with a clear emphasis on the exploitation of secondary products. The …

  • The Dataset for Tracing Invisible Hearths and Daily Routines through Carbonized Plant Remains and Geochemical Signals in an Early Iron Age Smithy at Pungrt Hillfort, Slovenia

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Tjaša Tolar et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Open Archaeology Data•2026

The dataset presented in this paper comprises results from archaeobotanical and geoarchaeological analyses. It was compiled primarily to reconstruct the location of the archaeologically invisible forge hearth within a late 6th- and early 5th-century BC smithy in Building 24 at Pungrt Hillfort, central Slovenia. The analysed sediment samples were systematically collected in a 50×50 cm grid during the excavation of the building. Archaeobotanical re…

  • PXRF spectrometry in the geoarchaeological analysis of archaeological deposits: Optimizing laboratory methods and protocols

Open Access•Agni Prijatelj, Nejc Golob et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2026

Portable X-ray fluorescence (pXRF) spectrometry is widely employed in the geoarchaeological analysis of archaeological deposits. However, the preparation methods and laboratory protocols used remain diverse, with established standards frequently disregarded. In this study, we examine the effects of grinding on the precision of mean analyte concentrations and evaluate the suitability of different factory calibrations and their associated measureme…

Open Access•Luka Gruškovnjak, Agni Prijatelj et al.•ARTICLE•Documenta Praehistorica•2025

In this paper, we present an interdisciplinary and multiscalar study of an Early Iron Age smithy uncovered at the Pungrt hillfort in Central Slovenia. By examining and comparing the stratigraphic and artefactual evidence preserved at both macro- and micro-scales this study highlights the importance of integrated micromorphological and micro-refuse analyses in settlement contexts. Our integrated approach allowed us to identify the blacksmith’s wor…

Open Access•Tamara Leskovar, Timotej Knific et al.•ARTICLE•Arheološki vestnik•2024

Skeletal remains from archaeological and forensic contexts are commonly used for various analyses, including DNA. Our research investigates relatively fast and inexpensive ATR-FTIR spectroscopy with further data manipulation as a potential pre-screening technique for assessing the preservation state of skeletal remains. We seek to correlate spectra and chemometric indices with the biological, chemical, and physical composition of the skeletal tis…

The burial of multiple individuals within a single funerary monument invites speculation about the relationships between the deceased: were they chosen on the basis of status, gender or relatedness, for example? Here, the authors present the results of aDNA and isotope analyses conducted on seven individuals from an Early Iron Age barrow at Dolge njive, south-eastern Slovenia.
