  • Jews, Landlords and Peasants in the Ghaznavid Bamiyan Hinterland

    Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Atiqot•2024

This paper discusses the ‘Bamiyan Papers,’ also known as the ‘Afghan Genizah,’ which probably originated in the Bamiyan region in present-day central Afghanistan. Particular attention is given here to their earliest phase, comprising the private archive of Yehuda ben Daniel, a Jewish landowner residing in early Ghaznavid Bamiyan in the first half of the eleventh century, who plays a central role in this study. The archive documents shed significa…

  • Indian Frontier in the Samanid Period Based on a New Source

Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2024

The article introduces a previously unknown Arabic source detailing the preparations for a battle between local Muslim rulers, likely vassals of the Samanids (204-395/819-1005), against the ruler of Ghaznī and his allies, the Hindushahs, near Ghaznī in the mid-fourth/tenth century. By closely reading, translating, and analyzing this manuscript fragment, I aim to shed light on the political realities of the Indian frontier of the Islamic world bef…

  • Rabbanite Views and Rabbinic Literature in Judeo-Persian Karaite Exegesis

    Open Access•Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2022

This article discusses the outlook of Judeo-Persian Karaite authors on Rabbanite law and rabbinic literature based on an exegetical corpus written in Early Judeo-Persian from the eleventh century, which mostly remains in manuscript form. A close examination of this corpus demonstrates the authors’ complex attitude towards their contemporary Rabbanites and early Jewish literature. By relying on the teachings of the Karaite community of Jerusalem (…

  • The Early Judeo-Persian Manuscripts in the British Library and in the National Library of Russia

    Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Intellectual History of the…•2020

This article concerns a textual corpus of nine manuscripts written in Early Judeo-Persian. These manuscripts, which are preserved in the British Library and in the National Library of Russia, contain various exegetical works copied by the same group of scribes during the eleventh-twelfth centuries. This article attempts to demonstrate that these manuscripts were also composed in the same possibly-Karaite intellectual milieu, and not merely copied…

  • What is the “Afghan Genizah”? A short guide to the collection of the Afghan Manuscripts in the National Library of Israel, with the edition of two documents

    Open Access•Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Afghanistan•2019•Cited by: 3•References: 11

This article provides an overview of a rare collection of manuscripts that was purchased by the National Library of Israel in recent years. These manuscripts, which belong to a larger corpus of manuscripts known as the “Afghan Genizah,” appear to have originated in central Afghanistan, possibly in the Bamiyan area, and are datable to a period of two hundred years, namely, from the early 5th/11th century to the early 7th/13th century.

  • Polemical Aspects in an Early Judeo-Persian Bible Exegesis - The Commentary on the Story of Ḥannah (RNL Yevr.-Arab. I 4608)

    Open Access•Ofir Haim•ARTICLE•Entangled Religions•2018

The article discusses the attitude towards Christians, Muslims, and the “foreign sciences” based on one of the only extant polemical texts written in Early Judeo-Persian—a passage from an unpublished commentary on story of Ḥannah preserved in the National Library of Russia (RNL Yevr.-Arab. I 4608). In addition, the article attempts to define the relation of this commentary to the broader intellectual environment of the medieval Jewish world. A cl…
