  • Two Pharmacological Texts on Whey by Abū Bakr Muḥammad ibn Zakariyyāʾ al-Rāzī (d. 925)

Aileen Das, Pauline Koetschet•ARTICLE•Journal of the American Oriental…•2021

This article offers the first edition and translation of two heretofore unpublished pharmacological treatises by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī (d. 925), namely Fī ittikhādh māʾ al-jubn (On How to Administer Whey) and Fī manāfiʿ māʾ al-jubn (On the Benefits of Whey), which seem to have formed part of a lost volume on dairy products. As it demonstrates, al-Rāzī's examination of whey is connected to his philosophical interest in the complex nature of simple subs…

The edition includes a comprehensive introduction which discusses the treatise’ most significant philosophical features.

  • Abū Bakr Al-Rāzī Et Le Signe

    Pauline Koetschet•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2017

This article argues that a fragment from a lost treatise by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī (d. 925) is preserved in the Book on Morphology Kitāb al-Taṣrīf ) by Ps-Ǧābir ibn Ḥayyān. Paul Kraus reached the conclusion that the collection to which this book belongs was written between the end of the ninth and the beginning of the tenth century AD. This fragment represents the first attempt – to our knowledge – to analyze the logical structure of sign-based inferen…

  • Galien, Al-Rāzī, Et L’éternité Du Monde. Les Fragments Du Traité Sur La Démonstration , Iv, Dans Les Doutes Sur Galien

    Pauline Koetschet•ARTICLE•Arabic Sciences and Philosophy•2015

This article aims to reconstruct part of Book IV of Galen's lost treatise On Demonstration . This reconstruction is based on testimonies transmitted by Abū Bakr al-Rāzī (d. 925) in the Doubts About Galen , as well as on a source that until now has never been studied, namely the Solution to the Doubts About Galen of Abū al-ʿAlāʾ ibn Zuhr (d. 1131). This paper argues that, in Book IV, Galen maintains that no one can reach any certain conclusion reg…
