Having the card makes us feel worthless
Since the 2000s, hundreds of government-funded health insurance (GFHI) schemes were introduced in India. These schemes are meant to prevent poorer households from incurring catastrophic health expenditures. Through GFHIs, policy-makers want to mobilize the decision-making powers of private consumers in a liberalized healthcare market. Patients are called upon to act as 'co-creators' of healthcare value by optimizing supply through demand. Based o…
Changes in Subjective Well-Being in India
Despite the growing literature on subjective well-being (SWB), few studies have focused on developing countries. Applying robust OLS and ordered probit models to the India Human Development Survey panel data in 2005 and 2012, we empirically assess SWBchangesin 2005-2012, based on a self-reported measure of changes in economic well-being, as a function of household and state covariates in 2005. This is in sharp contrast with earlier studies' focus…
The Fight
What are the disciplinary practices in which inner-city schools engage? How is order maintained or restored? Drawing on a three-year ethnographic study of a public charter school in Philadelphia, this study demonstrates the significance of understanding school discipline through a cultural lens. Beginning with a case study of a fight in the cafeteria, I describe how teachers, administrators, and students made sense of the school’s disciplinary et…
D ollard, J ohn (1900–80), Race and Caste Thesis
Among the many prominent studies on race relations in America, John Dollard's work Caste and Class in a Southern Town , first published in 1937, continues to be most influential piece of research. John Dollard was an American psychologist and social scientist. He put forth a caste–class thesis that constitutes the psychological and psychoanalytical perspective on how caste and class shaped race relations in the Deep South. In this research Dollar…
How Pervasive is Eating Out in India
A key feature of India's economic transformation has been a change in the nature of diets. There is a move away from inferior to superior foods and a substitution of traditional staples by primary food products, reflected in higher consumption of proteins, sugars, fats and vegetables. As part of this dietary transition, our analysis focuses on the pervasiveness of eating out and is based on a rich household survey for 2005. We broadly confirm the…
The Making and Unmaking of Local Democracy in an Indian Village
This study is an ethnographic investigation of a gram sabha (village assembly), the cornerstone of local democracy, in Soonaghalli, in the Mandya district of Southern Karnataka, India. Observation of the meeting and informal, open-ended conversations with the key actors illuminated how democratic policies that are conceived at the global level are practiced and experienced by local community members. The article speaks to the significance of movi…
The Legacy of Racial Caste
With the racial progress the nation has made over the past half century, including the growth of the black middle class and the election of a black president, many are now prepared to proclaim the United States a postracial society, where egalitarian values most often prevail; race is no longer a significant barrier to power, privilege, and prestige; and racial prejudice is mostly a thing of the past. When observed ethnographically, the lived exp…
On Hunger and Child Mortality in India
Despite accelerated growth there is pervasive hunger, child undernutrition and mortality in India. Our analysis focuses on their determinants. Raising living standards alone will not reduce hunger and undernutrition. Reduction of rural/urban disparities, income inequality, consumer price stabilization, and mothers' literacy all have roles of varying importance in different nutrition indicators. Somewhat surprisingly, public distribution system (P…
National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Poverty and Prices in Rural India
The objective of this analysis is mainly to construct an intuitive measure of the performance of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (NREGS) in India. The focus is on divergence between demand and supply at the district level. Some related issues addressed are: (i) whether the gap between demand and supply responds to poverty; and (ii) whether recent hikes in NREGS wages are inflationary. Our analysis confirms responsiveness of the pos…
The Democracy Makers
Common interest groups, village institutions and the rural poor in India
The District Poverty Initiatives Project (DPIP) in India was launched in a few states in recent years with a view to ensuring that the most disadvantaged or the poorest have a central role in the design and implementation of subprojects vital to their livelihoods. An elaborate organisational structure at the state, district and village levels was created to give local needs and priorities due attention. Since the most disadvantaged lack awareness…
Panchayats, Communities, and the Rural Poor in India
Despite large outlays, poverty alleviation measures have not made a significant dent in rural poverty in India. Disillusionment with these measures culminated in the 73rd Constitutional (amendment) Act in 1993, designed to revitalise the Panchayat system (consisting of elected Panchayats at different levels) in India. The focus of the present study is on its poverty alleviating potential. Emphasising that decentralisation is essentially a politic…
Policy reforms, institutions and the poor in rural India
Structural adjustment in India was a response to the macro‐economic crisis of early 1991. Anticipating unfavourable short‐term effects of the policy reforms on the poor, outlays on anti‐poverty programmes were stepped up, and in 1992, the landmark 73rd Constitutional (Amendment) Act restructured local government councils, or panchayats. Whether this restructuring made any difference through the better design and implementation of anti‐poverty pro…
Nutritional Assessment of the Warli Tribals of Maharashtra State
Over the last few decades the subject of Anthropology has evolved from a mere descriptive phase to analytical phase and further to interpretative phase. In this process many sub disciplines have modified their approach also in order to cops up with newer methodology. An integrative approach used in the present study is mainly to focus on the aim of the assessment, evaluation and interpretation of health, nutrition and child growth aspects of Warl…
