  • Questions in the TED-Multilingual Discourse Bank and the development of an annotation scheme

    Open Access•Deniz Zeyrek, Amália Mendes•ARTICLE•Linguistics Vanguard•2025

In this paper, we analyze question-answer pairs and stand-alone questions within the spoken discourse of TED Talks, specifically focusing on the TED-Multilingual Discourse Bank. Our aim is to reveal various characteristics of questions through an annotation approach. We have developed a taxonomy, referred to as the TAQ-TED, to categorize types of questions and examine their information transfer and dialogue control functions, drawing on the Dynam…

  • Analysis of Three Complement-Taking Predicates in Spoken Turkish

    Open Access•Deniz Zeyrek•ARTICLE•Languages•2025•References: 26

This paper presents a corpus-based synchronic investigation of three Turkish mental-cognitive verbs in the present tense: san 'guess, believe' and zannet 'suppose, assume' (in the first person) and bil 'know' (in the second person), in spoken discourse. These verbs, known as complement-taking predicates (CTPs), tend to appear without clausal complements in discourse and function as idiomatic units conveying epistemic modality. This paper characte…

  • Explicitness and implicitness of discourse relations in a multilingual discourse bank

Open Access•Amália Mendes, Deniz Zeyrek et al.•ARTICLE•Functions of Language•2023

Proposals such as continuity and causality-by-default relate the level of expectedness of a relation to its linguistic marking as an explicit or implicit relation. We investigate these two proposals with regard to the English transcripts of six TED Talks and their Lithuanian, Portuguese and Turkish translations in the TED-Multilingual Discourse Bank (TED-MDB), annotated for discourse relations, following the Penn Discourse Treebank style of annot…

  • An Exploratory Analysis of TED Talks in English and Lithuanian, Portuguese and Turkish Translations

Open Access•Deniz Zeyrek, Amália Mendes et al.•ARTICLE•Contrastive Pragmatics•2022

This paper contributes to the question of how discourse relations are realised in TED talks. Drawing on an annotated, multilingual discourse corpus of TED talk transcripts, we examine discourse relations in English and Lithuanian, Portuguese and Turkish translations by concentrating on three aspects: the degree of explicitness in discourse relations, the extent to which explicit and implicit relations are encoded inter- or intra-sententially, and…

  • Runs in Folktales and the Dynamics of Turkish Runs

    Deniz Zeyrek•ARTICLE•Asian Folklore Studies•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Runs are inherent to Turkish folktales, as they are to folktales of certain other cultures. They are traditionally accepted forms, and useful compositional devices that function as bridges between the world of the tale and the world of everyday reality. This study attempts to demonstrate the dynamics of runs through an examination of the stylistic techniques that narrators employ, showing in particular how surface morphology and syntax help narra…
