    The author argues that the question of plurality and commonality in Dutch ‘basic education’ is due to recent immigration and growing ethnic diversity. A new education act is in the making and the question rises in which way the demarcation of subjects and subject matter has to reflect the cultural differences on the one hand and the common cultural basis on the other.     It is the merit of Helena W. F. Stellwag to have introduced philosophical analysis into Dutch philosophy of education. In 1970, near the end of her academic career (Stellwag was professor of pedagogics1 at the University of Amsterdam until 1970), her book "Situatie" en "relatie" ("Situation" and "relation") came out.
