Displaced children of Europe, then and now
The displaced children of Europe, who live in and through landscapes and in temporary accommodations—their bare worlds of life stuffed into rucksacks—are our constant companions, their movement and immobility paraded as a geopolitical inconvenience and security threat to governments and officials even before they embark on treacherous Mediterranean sea and land crossings to hoped-for asylum in Europe. Gigliotti examines the humanitarian ambitions…
Memorialization of Genocide
Faultlines
A century ago, the opening of the First World War marked the beginning of a new era of European experience. For more than three decades after the July crisis of 1914, the continent was torn apart by wars, revolutions, political upheavals and depressions. To contemporaries it seemed that the nineteenth-century age of relative peace and limited war had passed for good. The paradox of modern European history's barbaric wars and high civilisations wa…

Genocide yet again
This article investigates three recent human rights memoirs that chronicle the Rwandan genocide of 1994: Emergency Sex (and other desperate measures): True Stories from a War Zone, Shake Hands with the Devil: the failure of humanity in Rwanda , and The Zanzibar Chest: a memoir of love and war. I use these memoirs to explore the complexities of bearing witness to ethnic violence and war as an autobiographical subject shaped by the memory of histor…
Cattle Car Complexes
This article explores critical complexes relating to the construction of historical captivity in deportation train journeys by examining fictional and testimonial accounts of that experience. Using Thane Rosenbaum’s short story "Cattle Car Complex," the author shows that fiction is a prism through which to view victims’ experiences of deportation-experiences that tend to be overlooked in interpretive literature about the Holocaust. Historians hav…
Acapulco in the Atlantic’
This article examines the foundation objectives, settlement history and ethnic relations of the tiny but idyllic Sosúa in the Dominican Republic. Sosúa was established in 1940 as the first and only Jewish agricultural colony resulting from discussions at the 1938 Evian conference in France, which unsuccessfully addressed the growing refugee displacement produced by Nazi Germany's relentless persecution of Jews and other minorities. Fleeing from t…
Unspeakable Pasts as Limit Events
This article examines the role of testimony in the production of the memory of the Holocaust and the practice of forcible removals in Australia as “limit events”. A “limit event” is an event or practice of such magnitude and profound violence that its effects rupture the otherwise normative foundations of legitimacy and so‐called civilising tendencies that underlie the constitution of political and moral community. The references are the stories …
